Re: has anyone swaped a 97 vortec motor, tranny and the computer stuff into 85 crew c

I've never done the swap but it should be pretty straitforward since the 5.7 vortec is a regular old smallblock. Painless makes a standalone harness for the application so that's a non issues. The only thing might be the controller for the transmission in that I am not aware if the painless harness will handle the tranny too but if it does just plug and play. Keep us up to date on the swap, I'm interested to see how it turns out.

i thought that painless made a harness but I'm tight on cash and would like
to use the stock 97 harness if its posable... i don't see why i couldn't
use it.

I am in the process of doing this now.. i just picked up a painless harness off of craigslist there is another one on there

http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/pts/1760150898.html

half the price of a new one makes things a lotttt easier i started going through the stock one i wanted to pull my hair out.. it can be done but going through it wire by wire isnt fun! i also have the PIN outs if you would like them..

Hey pin outs tell you what wire does what and where its going to... here is one for a 96

http://www.lt1swap.com/1996_vortec_5.7/index.htm

there is also one for a 99 you are going to have to deal with the VATS antitheft device if you do a search on google you can find a DIY on how to disable it before you pull the motor from the donor truck.. if not it will never start unless you have the ECM tuned which i would suggest anyways!

Reason i got the painless harness was so i didnt pull out my own hair!

You need a np241 transfer case from a 89-91 Suburban or K5. The one on your 97 comes out on the drivers side. The one on your 85 crew will probably have the wrong spline count if it's 3/4 or 1 ton, and it won't have the electronic speed sensor. I'm assuming the np241 will work with your transmission???

Thanks for the heads up but I know all about that and I got one out of a 90 suburban ready to go in. And yes you are right I need the 241 because it has the vss.

Thanks
