Need help with leak - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My transmission is leaking quite considerably. I know nothing about how to fix it or what to look for. Below is a picture of where I think the leak is coming from. Any information regarding what typically leaks from this area, how difficult it would be to fix, and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

That is the speedo gear. That housing pops right out. There is an o-ring on the outside of it that you can try to change. It is common however to have the seal on the inside go bad too. A lot of times the speedo gear itself is worn where it contacts the inner seal. You can pick up that part pretty cheap though.

You can get a gear and housing from the Chevy dealer or internet. It may be just the O ring. Take the screw off the retainer and pull it out.

Bare with me if you would. Does the speedo screw off? And do you have to remove the hex bolt and plate. Is the part you are speaking about replacing called the bullet?

The housing pulls out. It might be tight. I've had to use a screwdriver to pry it out. Yes, you have to remove the hex bolt and retainer.

Look at the pics I sent. It's also called a tranmission gear housing.
Either the O ring is missing or worn, or the driven gear (pictured) is worn, or even the housing.

It would be wise to get the assembly and the color coded gear. The gearsl have different amount of teeth. Take all of the parts with you and it should be less than $20 at the dealer. At least when I bought it.

Thanks. This is what came out. If I take it to the dealership will they replace the entire thing?

The housing and the gear will be sold separately. The outer o-ring looks fine. I'd guess that the inner seal and/or the gear are worn.

I took the whole thing in. If they're like the guys here, they know exactly what to get for you. Sometimes you get someone that has no clue, so ask for the service manager or some older guy that has been around a while.

IIRC the housing comes with an O ring on it already. Even though it looks good, it could be hardened or rough. I would just get the gear, housing and o ring.

Thanks for all of the help. I ended up with the guy without a clue - he told me his catalog only went back to 1973. Thanks to the information I got here, I was able to walk him through it and finally found the part. The gear, bullet and o-ring are sold separately. They did not have a gear in stock, but mine looked fine. I got the bullet and o-ring. It is all back together and doesn't appear to be leaking.

Ok, I'm back 2 years later with the same leak. I can't imagine the new parts I put in two years ago have deteriorated since it only gets driven periodically. Can anyone think of something else that needs to be fixed? Or should I buy the same part again new?

It looks to me like it's actually coming from out of the speedo cable connector.

The picture of the leak is from two year ago. I haven't taken a picture of the new leak, but it looks very similar. Neither leaks were small, they came on like there was an instant, catastrophic failure which allow a bunch of fluid to drain. When I fixed it the first time, it worked with out a fail for two years, then it happened again. I am wondering if the internal or external o-ring could have failed in such a short period of time.
