305 engine help???
I have an stock '88 305 Chevy roller-cam TBI engine that's been sitting in the garage since I took it out of a Camaro. It just needs valve guides. I was thinking of throwing it in my '71 C10 pickup and was wondering if there is a cam, intake/carb setup anyone could suggest, just for a little pep and better sound out the dual exhaust? I'll eliminate the computer.
It's only an old patina'd shop truck, so I don't want to go too crazy or $$$$$. Thanks |

Re: 305 engine help???
leave the cam, get a 86 up intake off a monty or truck, get a q jet
replace tha valve seals, leave the guides alone, and go |

Re: 305 engine help???
A 280H Comp Cam with Edelbrock Performer/Q-jet works well in a 305.

Thanks stitch...meant valve seals. I've had more luck with holleys, any ideas?
Do I have to change distributors? Is a 274 cam too much? Thanks |

Re: 305 engine help???
I like the comp cams x4260hr in a roller 305, and an eddy, or holley 500 cfm carb, 1 1/2" primary long tubes with 2" duals. Should be about 330-345 hp, and 375-390 ft lbs and pull hard till about 4500-5000 rpm with HUGE lowend to mid-range.

Re: 305 engine help???
Honestly the TBI heads aren't worth the expense of the seals without MAJOR port work, and even then there are better options, I'd look for a set of older 416 casting to maintain your CR.

cause if I was to unbolt the heads a set of truck/van 305 vortecs would be the only ones I'd bolt on, as he has to buy a carb intake anyways.. but for what he's doing the stockers that cost nothing(he has them) work. Last edited by stich626; 04-03-2011 at 05:55 PM. |

Re: 305 engine help???
I have a Camaro 305 in my 68. Internally, she's pretty much stock. Never been on the road yet but runs like a banshee up and down the driveway.. Then again my bed is off the truck. Just saw your in hawthorne, im 20 mins away if that. I was going to throw a 280H cam in it but didnt bother since I have a 454 waitin when this one blows up.

Re: 305 engine help???
My point was the 305 vortecs are not a true vortec head as they don't have the "fast burn" chamber, the only thing that is the same is the intake bolt pattern. The beauty here is the choice is all yours. I'm not trying to start a poo flinging match or anything, I just prefer not to use 305 vortec heads for my own reasons. If you match your combo right either choice will work fine.
