PCV Defined?
Can someone define for me the PCV valve and how it plays a part in the vacuum system....as well, why some engines have them and others don't?

THE POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTALATION VALVE.....
this little baby pulls all the smoke..moisture..acid gases.. out of your crank case..even helps ring seal... the only time this little baby is not used is in the case of a high pro engine..mine use's a moroso e-vac system hooked up to my headers to the crank case via the valve covers...thats how i get all those nasty's out of my engine..and i am sure it don't work as well as a pvc would ...but with a big harry cam, i have no or little vacuum..to run the thing...the 1250 dominator does not even have a port for one!!!!!! i am sure..SURE SOMEONE WILL HAVE MORE OF THE SAME TO ADD |

Early engines didn't use PCV either. They used a thing called a "road draft tube" that used the air moving under the car to evacuate the gasses. Mainly, emissions requirements caused the widespread use of PCV. It just wasn't environmentally friendly to let those fumes go into the atmosphere. With the PCV, they get burned. This is one of the few emissions devices that work well, and are helpful to the health of your engine.

yea what they said
the pvc is needed.
but i have an idea. and want some input. i got two valve cover holes. one for pvc one for the breather. if i plug the breather side and calibrate a restriction to give me (x=vacuum), couldnt i build vacuum up inside and still get the gases out? x=restriction+pvc? |

They do that in some drag cars. The early Escort's smog pump is one they use to suck al the fumes out...but they normally don't last long thoguh.

Thanks everyone....I am convinced I have a vacuum leak and was curious where the PCV valve sat in the mixture....I am sure my leak is in an odd place because I have checked verything I can think of.
