01 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 5.3 rear interchange?

My work truck, has 265K miles and runs great. Had a small diff fluid leak at left rear axle near perch, turned out to be a hairline crack on axle tube, about 3'' long. Has been like that for about a month with no problems. Last night the wheel bearing burned out? My welder guy says maybe crack could be welded, but probably cracked from torking and would probably happen again? So, I'm now looking to replace the whole rear unit. What GMC Chevy years/models will interchange? Has 373 gears. Thanks

Should be any 99-04 1500 with 3.73s. In 05 they went to drum brakes and I'm not sure if they can be easily swapped.
