Re: Sometimes ya just get lucky!

One thing to check is the two wires to the coil out of the base. I went through two modules in as many weeks on a rebuilt HEI. I noticed the insulation on the wires had a hairline crack, when flexing them back I saw the green of the copper wires. I pulled a harness off a junk truck and never had another problem. But,I've never had a Whataburger.

Yeah... that kinda got me... that's how I know. I was on my 3rd module when my dad said... you know that set up I gave you may be missing the little metal ground strap (22 year old me... "huh?") yeah, it's kinda important...

Yup. It was missing. No more fried ignition coils since around 2003ish.

The strap goes under the coil and slides/feeds into where the plug goes (in between the to straps from the coil).

I found these pics on the net, hope they help.

Ok, I know for a fact my distrib does have that metal ground strap.

Tim, my wiring harness coming out of the modual that exits out of the distributor does have some hairline cracking in the wire insulation. Or I should did have some hairline cracking. I used a productlike Permatex high tack gasket sealant that brushes on to seal up to insulation. I had used it several years ago because wire were arcing across each other and truck was running real spotty.

I should probably also check the wiring insulation, maybe it is starting to crack again.

I just wanted to thank everyone for giving me some heads up on what to look at as potential problems.

Oh yea Tim, you gotta try some Whataburger, if given a chance.

Same here, but I tell you one of the best burgers I ever had was at a strip club on the Interstate.

It's a scientific fact that when one sense is heightened (vision...among others) to a high level it heightens other senses (taste) equally. You may never know what those burgers really taste like.
