CLR who has used it and how

Ok, got grandpa's old truck and I am just not ready to paint it ( finances mostly ) but I want to drive it again. So my questions are how to use the CLR to remove the rust and restore some of the paint underneath. How did you dilute it? did you use the green scotch brite? how did you apply spray on first then scrub or just dip and go? how much scrubbing ? what did you do to neutralize it? how did you seal it to keep it from rusting back over? Did you use a respirator?

Give me the run down on how to do this.

I have the frame, engine, and suspension about done and I am ready to drive it until I can paint it properly.

Re: CLR who has used it and how

Very nice patina!! I like to use 000 or 0000 steel wool instead of a scuff pad. A scuff pad is pretty aggressivcared will remove paint. A spray bottle works well to apply the CLR. I like to use Johnson's paste carnauba wax (made for furniture) to seal the paint and add a little sheen. The wax is thicker than automotive wax so it works well on patina'd surfaces.

Here's an earlier thread that shows some progress and explains what they did:

Re: CLR who has used it and how

I've done the CLR trick on my '64. I used it straight from the bottle, using a green Scotchbrite. Buy a set of good rubber gloves. I gave it a good heavy wetting with the CLR, let it sit for a few minutes, then started scrubbing using very light pressure. You'll get a lot of rusty residue, so after the first scrubbing, you'll get the majority of the rust removed, then grab the hose and let it run on the panel while you continue to scrub the remaining rust off.

I did some before and after shots on my '64 build thread below:

Re: CLR who has used it and how

Here's a couple pics where I cleaned the lip around my fenderwell tubs. There's a soft shine left after waxing the CLR'd area.

That is amazing! who would have thought the would be paint UNDER all the rust.

Are the fumes from the CLR bad, do I need to wear a respirator?

Re: CLR who has used it and how

I've used it a few times on different things and found that it's usually mostly just rust stains on top of the paint, instead of actual rust coming thru the paint. The stains make it look worse than it really is. The fumes aren't bad if you do it outside.

Yeah - it's usually the other way around after someone tries to fix it! Cool thread - I'd love to see some old rusty trucks patina'ed by simply using CLR (kinda like the nice truck in Markeb01's link above) - would love to see how that one turned out.

Here's one I THINK may have been clr'ed. I think it's probably also been formally clear-coated (a little too shiny for my taste) but one of my favorite 55.1's (and, yes, I'm a big fan of those old AD trucks too). I think the CLR looks kinda like tha faux tina that the did on the "Trucks" tv show on their old AD truck project. But the real thing sure looks better....

Anyway, here's the one I think looks like a "CLR" job - but I don't know it was for sure...
