New speedo cable
I put in a new speedo cable in my 64 c10 today, and it makes a crazy squeaking noise coming from the speedo. I was thinking maybe it needs to be lubed up, who knows the last time it was functional.it's reading way off too,not really sure why but the squeaking need to to be stopped first. Any suggestions? Th350 tranny

I don't know if it was the right thing to do, but I lubed mine with silicone spray.

it shouldn't need to be lubed at all (but the silicone spray probably doesn't hurt things - definitely do not lube it with oil.
The squeaking is 99% of the time due to there being too tight a radius somewhere. If there's ANYthing different in the routing of your cable from the original, or of it's a different length, that's probably the culprit. I swapped to ta T5, so original length cable was a no go, had to buy a new cable twice to get the right routing, best (gentlest) bends, etc etc. If you just replaced a stock length cable - the best way to fix is to slightly change where on the cable the frame clips hold it by an inch or two to finesse the bends. Sometimes hard to tell where the noise is in the cable, so you may have to guess by just slightly changing the routing a few times til it seems to magically disappear. |

So should I Just spray silicone spray down the middle of the cable? To put the bearing grease id you pullnthe inside cable completely out and swipe it?

On my '66 I pulled the cable out of the jacket and cleaned it with penatrating oil IIRC and it solved the noise.

I sprayed some silicone spray down the cable and squirted the speedo from behind today and the squeak is gone!!! Hope it stays that way. Thanks for the help guys. Now just gotta calibrate the speedo
