What? oh okay.....this is why you run a big block!

Guys.....just had to share. Now that my "shakes" are gone I thought I would post up a fun video. This is a testament about not going too big and parts matching. It's a BONE STOCK 454 with stock, small valved 781 heads. It has almost NO compression (don't even think it's 8:1) and a really small roller cam. Yes, that's a tiny 650 double pumper!!

For those of you that have ever video'd, in the rig was much more scary than the video shows. She flat scoots!

That looks like a lot of fun, seems to have tons of power for being pretty much stock. I hope my 402 turns out half that good.

Yeah I do need to get an air cleaner. I was testing a customer's carb. I sent him the videos and he sent back a big smile.

Just realize that I have you by 52 cubic inches and the 781s are excellent "stock" iron heads. If your heads are "truck" heads then they won't flow quite like these. Oh yeah....I also have about $800 JUST in my valve train. With that said, I have a truck 396 in my 3/4 ton farm rig. I'm very happy with what it can do. The torque alone that you will pic up over a mild sbc will be gobs.

Ok i didnt realize you had good heads with work done to them. My motor is the passenger car motor and the heads are 292 so they are decent oval ports and they are shaved .030 for a little more compression. I think it should do decent but probably not as well as that 454. Plus it will be in the heavy chevelle compared to a truck that is lighter in the rear.

No work done. They are bone stock. I just installed the correct springs and roller rockers. Valves, ports....etc are stock. No milling. More hope?? She'll run just fine.

Ok, im having a decent amount of work done to mine and i guess really id doesn't take much to get 800 into a set of heads now that i think about it. Im not looking forward to my bill when the shop calls and tells me mine are done. I am also hoping to get some aluminum roller rockers eventually. So yah a little more hope.

Problem is it's somewhat of a rough country road. It's the kind that the gravel shoulder is about 2 inches past the white line. Not much room for error. This thing has only been on the road about 5 times since I built it. I have some suspension geometery I need to get ironed out before I make full passes. If you go back and look at the first video, it was just starting to get away from me when I backed out. If you look at the last one, You'll see me get back on it in 3rd but it just blows the tires up again!

This is what it looked like when I started in. A 74 is certainly not my idea of a cool Camaro but I was looking for ANYTHING before I found this (El Camino, Monte....etc). I couldn't turn down $500 for a solid roller. It turned out to be in great shape for the money.

I never used to be a fan of this gen camaro, but they have really started to grow on me. OH, and a well built big block definately helps

WOW-looks like great performance from that big block! I have a 74 454 bored 60 over with 781 truck heads. Everything was rebuilt and balanced to the 74 specs.( about 8:1 comp ratio). I put in a comp cams XE262H-10 with the matching springs and 7/16 push rods and roller tip rockers, edelbrock rpm manifold with a new edelbrock 750 electric choke carb, headers and an HEI ignition( China made). It is coupled to a fresh turbo 400 with a 3:23 rear end.

My truck does not perform anywhere close to your ride. Does a roller camshaft make that much difference in over all power? I should be able to spank the tire too( open rear) but nothing like what you have. Any ideas on something in my set-up I might have missed? Sorry to high jack your thread but your truck gets it on!

A few things: First of all, a roller cam CAN make a huge difference. This motor used to have a crane 272H single pattern with .515 lift. There is a noticeable difference with the roller. The R's just shoot up. Now in all fairness to you though, I have a 3K stall, 4.20 gears and at least 1,000 lbs on you. That stall alone is like a sling shot. I wouldn't get too hung up on comparing a big heavy truck to this rig.

A big factor can be your timing. These low comp BBCs love a lot of initial timing. That motor is set at 18*. What are you set at? I do know that when this was in my 5,600 lbs 3/4 ton, it flat ripped for a truck too though.
