muncie m22 question

I am looking at a muncie m22 rock crusher right now and i had a question on the value of it being that it is in a borg warner T10 case. The transmission was professionally rebuilt and never been installed since the guy had the wrong spline when he got a new clutch and decided not to use this trans.. I was wondering would the value take a big hit from not having the correct case? Also is there a way to tell that it is actually an m22 and not just the T10 from looking at it now. I dont know if this helps but its 26 spline in 32 out. Thanks

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong but if it's in a T-10 case.....it's a fricking T-10!!! Is this a craigslist deal? Munci and Borg cases are very different and not interchangeable. This is some guy that has read something wrong or was took when he bought it. The Muncie's have almost straight cut gears that take a lot of the load/torque off the rear of the trans which is why they were behind the biggest ground-pounders GM had (oh and my truck). Maybe it has some aftermarket gears but it is not an M-22.

BTW....they will all have the fine spline TH400 output but could have both a coarse or fine spline input.

I agree, if its in a T-10 case its a T-10, nothing interchanges, if it has a 26 spline input and 32 out it should a Super T-10 but still a T-10.

I know that BW T-10s had 9 bolts on the cover and Muncies had 7 and the cases and tailshaft housings are very different. I think this person is pulling your leg. The 26/32 spline count was on M22's from 1970-74 before that it was 10/27. Also as mentioned above the M22 has 20 degree cut gears which are much straighter than a M20 or M21 thats why they have the signature whine to them.

Ok good to here its on craigslist and he says the cases are interchangeable and the m22 case was cracked so this shop he got it from put it in the T10 case but it is still the m22s gears. He says he has his receipt but idk now. He told me 750 and that will include a hurst competition plus shifter and the linkage so it seems too cheap to be an m22.

Almost sounds like the T-10 I had in my 67 Chevy II years ago. It was fully rebuilt and had a new Hurst comp plus shifter on it. It was a cast case with an aluminum tailshaft.

A guy on the chevelle board just verified it to be a t10 with the craigslist ad i linked to him. Glad I didn't just hop on that seemingly good deal.

$750 would have been a great deal if it really had been rebuilt and was an M-22. I bought my M-22 about 8 years ago with the hurst shifter and rods, bell housing, clutch and pressure plate along with a 454 flywheel for $850 which was a good deal. I later put 650 into it for all new bearings, syncros....etc. I love it and it is darn near bullet proof. I have hammered the daylights out of it.

Sounds like you are looking at a Super T10, and not just a T10. Big difference. This is a good example of buyer beware on Craigslist IMO. The Super T10 is a really stout transmission with lots of aftermarket support.

I here they are bullet proof and that is a good reason for me to have one, i have had to have 5 transmissions rebuilt already and I just turned 21 lol. I have never broken a standard yet tho. And mike c that is some good info to refer back to as I keep looking. Thanks.

Any part or 4 speed can be broken though. You just have to put more HP to it that the mechanical design was intended to take. Imagine if the top fuel cars actually had a gear box!

yep, a muncie can be broken quite handily... trust me! Verified or not, call me skeptical on this one. Why not just buy an m22 in a muncie case - they can be found at about any swap meet. Might be a little more than $750, but not always. You sound hesitant (or maybe that's just me feeling hesitant for you), so I'm not sure I'd personally dive in.

Depending on the automatics you've blown out - don't feel that buying an m22 is the end of your driveline breakage (sounds as though you might drive like, well, like I drove when I was your age). Once I got the M21 in my 57 chev beefed up, I blew out 3 rear ends in short order, one on the post install test drive (), so start saving for that too as soon as you can.... Or "modify" the driving habits (I know, I know, my dad couldn't get me to modify mine either)

I had a ferd top loader in 70 Camaro. They say it's "supposed" to be as strong if not stronger than the M-22. I broke 1st and 3rd gear as a punk 19 yr old. Sucks when you have no money to fix something and you have to leave each stop light in 2nd and have 4th as your only other gear!

I was just questioning it because it was cheap, I dont really need it, I just bought a used saginaw for my c10 and it works fine I was just thinking of this as a spare if I was to break that one since it was cheap. Im in no rush to get another 4 speed at the moment just figured id pick up a cheap one if it presented itself. Also i drive pretty nice, I think I just have a lot of bad luck. Im hoping not to break many more parts.

You need to drive nice with a sag. They are not as strong as the Muncies or Borgs and I'm sure you know that. Those Super T-10s are a pretty decent and strong tranny. They can be had pretty right too. I see them out here in the $400-$500 range. Problem is guys try to sell the standard T-10s as a super just like guys alwasy list M-20s as 21s and 22s.

I have heard they are not the best but im using this truck as a daily driver during the summer no hard beatings. Its my dad i have to watch out for, always doing burnouts with it. For 200 bucks it will work for a while, its better than the old granny low 4 speed that was in it.

I had one in my 3900 pound 70 Chevelle behind a 496 making just over 600 ft-lbs and it never failed in three years of drag racing every weekend.

No point paying nearly the same amount of money for a good original core and having it rebuilt with stock parts when you can get all new parts and better materials.

I broke a freshly rebuilt M22 the first time my car hooked up at the track. Blew it into a thousand pieces and had to get stitches in my knee where the shifter hit it. I upgraded to one of these after that and never had a problem with the trans again.

That might have been what I meant. Is it autogear? Seems like a read somewhere that you can get the M-22 rebuilt with gears stronger than the GM ones. Maybe that makes it the "boulder crusher".

Don't know the brand. They were German made and tough as nails.
