Post Willys Jeep guy just brought home 66 fleetside

Spring arrived and the though of working on a 66 long bed from Texas versus my 52 Willys no floor fred flintstone truck won out.
So far cleaned out the mice and removed the bed as wood was gone but metal is intact. Neighbor suggested 3/4 pressure treated plywood?
My issue is with the straight 6. The motor seems stuck as a quick attempt with the fan belt showed. Strangely enough though the crank pulley has play to the tune of about an inch or so. I removed the belt completely tonight and could see the crank nut not moving and the pulley seems wobbly and broken. I am thinking of putting some brake fluid down the cylinders to see what happens. How can I tell if it is a 250 or 292? Where are the numbers and can I find out if the motor is original. I see Autozone and Advance both have crate engines for about $1500-$1700 bucks.

The 194/230/250 have the motor mounts directly across from each other. The 292 has staggered motor mounts with the passenger side further forward. Have you tried to turn it over with the starter?

Re: Willys Jeep guy just brought home 66 fleetside

I did not try the starter yet. Originally I figured I was going to pull the motor but I am starting to rethink getting it going. I think I will put something in the cylinders, marvel or brake fluid and hook a battery. It has an alternator so I think it is 12 v. Thanks for the welcome.

The 292 also has the larger side covers on the passenger side of the block.

Welcome to the forum

Another way to ID a 292 is the passenger side motor mount is between the distributor and the fuel pump. On the 230/250 it is behind both.

Re: Willys Jeep guy just brought home 66 fleetside

Thanks for the support I will post some pics soon. An update it looks like a 250 based on mounts. Yesterday I pulled the plugs and shot brake fluid down the cylinders, waited a while and put it in gear and just rocked the truck. I was delighted to see the drive shaft turn and the motor is free.! The crank pulley seems it was not tight enough or has the wrong key way and does not seem to have anything wrong. So I think now I will get new plugs, cap wires and see if I can't get some spark. I just might get it going after all. Next issue may be with the shifter linkage, It's a column shift and I would guess a three speed. This is my first column shift I thought the pattern was like an H only sideways. Problem is it only goes Up and down. Probably Reverse and First.
Any one know of a Service manual to download.?

I am a Willys guy that brought home a 66 C10 long bed big window. But it will have to wait until I finish my 47 CJ2A.

Re: Willys Jeep guy just brought home 66 fleetside

AMAZING! Got it running this afternoon. Had broken ignition wire, put on new battery cables and cleaned the plugs. The brake fluid I put in the cylinders was smoking out the carb before i even put gas to it! Nice cloud of smoke but sounds good. This is Good News!
I still could not turn crank by hand and I wonder if it was even stuck to begin with. Well onto the radiator, degreaser, new plugs cap and rotor. Damn I wish it wasn't going to snow tomorrow, the 70 degree weather a week ago was pure inspiration. !
