Thumbs up Wooden Center Console for my GMC

Hey y'all! I have a '72 GMC Sierra Grande that I just made a custom wooden console for.

It was a fairly easy project, just a little removable 14"x14" plywood stand with 2 cupholders and a 1 inch deep tray to hold my sunglasses and phone etc. that sits on the floor (Over the little hump) of my truck.

For the cupholders I laminated 4 blocks of wood together and used a 4" hole saw to drill them out. For the tray used a jig saw to cut out a square in two sheets of plywood and glued them together with another sheet of plywood for the bottom.

I will post some pictures and better instructions soon!

Re: Wooden Center Console for my GMC

Are you going to cover it in anything or paint it or just leave it bare?

I built one for my 82 but the top of it was about level with the seat. Had two cup holders, housed the CB, and some switches. I covered it in some marine carpet I had laying around that happened to be the same color as my interior.

I put some danish oil on it, I like the un-painted look.

Well, I'm not sure yet. Right now I'm just working on getting it to run better- I'm for sure gonna get a new set of speakers and a new radio/CD player.

What's the history of the truck? You buy it or was it handed down?

My grandpa handed it down to me and my dad! My dad took his first drivers test in it and I used to sit on grandpa's lap and drive when I was about 6 years old

Re: Wooden Center Console for my GMC

This is exactly what I want to do in my 69. I was thinking of cutting holes on the sides for two speakers.

County Girl, would there be enough room for some speakers?
Also, do you have any issues with your right foot on the gas pedal. Is there enough room?
TIA

Hey! In the LMC Truck Catalog I found some speakers designed for my exact year and model that look like the go under the dashboard where the air vent holes are, the speakers fit right in them, bout 100 dollars for them both.

And there's plenty room for my right foot with the console

Re: Wooden Center Console for my GMC

I would do some reading on the audio subforum of the board. Unless things have changed in the past few years people werent very happy with the in dash speaker setup. A better call is to either mount speakers in the doors (if you are ok with cutting them) or build some fiberglass kick panels (lots of how-tos on the forum). There are even some slim subwoofers that you can mount under the seat now-days.

Is that a clock in the center of the dash? CountryGirlT I'd sure would appreciate if a beautiful woman like you would get me a close up picture of that clock. Did I pour it on thick enough?

This girl doesn't need much flattering And it's actually a thermometer! Here's that pic for ya. My grandpa found it at a garage sale a long way back and stuck it on the dash just for kicks. Name: Heater Core 008.jpg
