Replacement VIN Tags

Looking for a replacement VIN tag for the door jam. Any one know where I can get a reproduction. I have a California Blue Tag and want to put the new vin # on the GM tag.

EXTREMELY Illegal. Even the rivets are in most places.

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

yep, this is an age-old problem for restorers. Unfortunately, less than honest folks in the past (and they remain in the present as well) have ruined some of the fun for the honest folks that just want to restore their trucks to like-new condition. But, then again, the frustrating rules also help protect us when we buy a used truck, so, personally, I'm glad they are there.

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

That's what I figured but I have seen many Repop Tags being sold on different websites for GM and other older vehicles but none for our trucks.

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

I've always been ambivalent about this type of stuff. You'd think there'd be a happy medium where reproduction VIN plates, cowl tags, SPID sheets and build sheets could be reproduced but with a subtle, though umistakable, indication that they are reproductions and for appearances only.

Then again, maybe that removes all purpose for their existence. If so, that means their only purpose is to deceive. And if that's the case, they -should- be illegal.

My opinions only, I may not understand all the issues.

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

It's pretty black and white, VIN tags are the official identification for each and every car built and cannot be removed or reproduced per federal rules. SPID sheets, door labels and build sheets are supporting documents that can be reproduced and are sold by just about every vendor that is out there. GM even officially licenses some of these items but NOT VIN tags.

If you have a NEW vin number issued by the California DMV i am sure it is nothing like an original VIN number.

Therefor anyone who knows these trucks would know it was not original.

Better stick with what is on it.

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

If you are refering to the acutaly metal plate that is rivetted to the door jamb then yes it is illegal to replace that but if you are talking about the blue stick on the drivers side door then there is a company that reproduces those, I found a link on this forum a while back. I'll do some searching and try to find it if that is what you are looking for.

I'd also be interested in learning how to get the blue paper tags

Re: Replacement VIN Tags

I'd bet that you could legally (not a lawyer, don't do time on my guess!) make one that was otherwise correct but read "REPRODUCTION" where the VIN should be. Or all zeros if you wanted to be stealtheir but still adhere to the spirit of it. The question I was hinting at above is would anyone want on if they -weren't- deceptive. Probably not, and that's the sad part.

They can and do all of this at some level... restamped blocks and reproduced tank stickers being the worst of it. I'd be scared paying for a 427/435 Vette or something where it's not rare enough (like an L-88) for each car to be well known and where you have to rely on protect-o-plate, VIN, build sheet and so on.
