Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

Hello,

I am finally hanging my new rear bumper (sport style) and have a couple questions. I am replacing a step bumper, so never had sport style to compare to. I have repaired all of the wiring hacks in the rear harness, except the marker light wiring, and the bumper and brackets are new from LMC.

1) I have the correct wire, with extra length, to repair the marker light wire. It appears that this single wire routing just goes from the light straight up under the bed to run with the rest of the wire harness. This would seem to leave the wire exposed with the gap from the bumper to bed, leading to potential damage. Is this correct routing? Or, how else should the wire get from the marker light to the rest of the harness?

2) I have the gravel shields and hardware to install them. I don't see what they do other than cover the brackets. Maybe I'm not seeing how they install right, but they seem to cover the sides and leave the area above the license plate open. Is that right? What do these really do?

Thanks,

Adam

The stone guards just keep rocks that kick up from your tires from bouncing off the inside of your bumper and hitting the bottom of your tailgate and the end of the box, they really work.

Ok, I guess I can see that. Thanks.

Any idea on the wire routing for the marker light? Is it supposed to be out in the open from the bumper to the bed? Or is it supposed to be routed differently?

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

That wire comes though the rear cross member, with the rest of the harness, through a similar size hole in the bed flange and run & clipped to the flange to the markers. The flange protects the wire from road and tire flung debris. I'd put some sleeving over the wire before clipping it to the flange.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure I understand. This is on a 67 in case that makes a difference, should have mentioned that earlier.

My rear light harness starts at the rear crossmember where it is a round plug. The two halves of the harness run on the framerail and then split at the end of the frame (not through any holes, just split at the end), and then is clipped to the bed going either direction to the taillights and reverse lights. The marker light wire comes off the left taillight and I'm thinking runs in the same clips as the harness back towards the center. But then I'm not sure how it should get to the marker light without being subject to road debris. Does this make sense? Does this routing sound correct? I'm not sure how it can go any different -- I will need pictures or a good description hopefully.

I'm sure there are differences between the years. I'm going to sit back and wait for some 67er to comment. If not then I would definitely use some plastic wire loom for protection.

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

Here's a picture of what it looks like when I put the wiring back the way it was when I bought the truck.

I can fit the rear connector through the hole above the frame rail, but I feel like if I do that I should have some type of grommet in there.

Still leaves me with a question of how to run the wire for the marker light as well. Maybe it is normally exposed between the bed and bumper, but I want to make sure I get ti right and have it protected.

Help?

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

OK, that's the bed flange I referenced. A grommet goes in the hole and the wires through that.

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

Excellent! I can find a grommet and make that work (I hope). Thanks!

Still need help on the marker light wiring. Anyone?

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

Ok, got a grommet and rue routed the wires. Looks much better.

I still need help with the marker light routing. I have plenty of the right wire and connector to splice back on. I don't know if I'm missing clips or how it's supposed to run.

Help please?

You do realize that you don't have any marker lights, right?

Maybe miscommunication is why I'm not getting any info.

License plate light. I'm trying to route the wire to the light above the license plate on my sport bumper.

Thanks!

Re: Rear Bumper Help (Marker Light Wiring and Gravel Shields)

OK, just follow along the rear side of the flange and then down to the light. Not much road or tire debris in the middle of the rear bumper. Use some plastic loom if you like.

Ok, let me just make sure I have this right before I go cutting the extra length of wire I have and putting it together. It's important to me because I will have to go digging around vans in the junkyard trying to find another wire if I screw this up!

Here's a couple pictures of what I think you're describing. It leaves the wire exposed between the bed and bumper. But if it's correct, then that's the way it should be. Unless these get destroyed because of that.

Can you (and/or others) confirm this is correct and safe or not?

Thanks for your help everyone -- I appreciate it.

Thanks for the help. Got the wire repaired and routed and everything is working well. Hopefully my fear of damage is unfounded. Time will tell!

For future searches, here is a pic of the final rear wiring harness routing.

Looks like mine too. Maybe put some small black ribbed wire loom on it.

Thanks again guys. Love the new bumper and how it turned out, especially compared to the original monstrosity!
