Re: 1ton upgread parts?

Upgraded steering components like these from offroaddesign, alot of off roaders convert the rear to disc brakes.

Re: 1ton upgread parts?

I have the early 80s Cadillac rear calipers on a homemade bracket on the 14 bolt full floater in my K5. The Idea was to have a parking brake. The Cadilac Calipers are basically the smaller Metric GM Calipers. So I used a rotor off of a 3/4 ton dodge front axle from the 80s because it was thinner than the Chevy stuff. The Hydraulic brakes work fine but the parking brake isn't worth a wooden nickle. Thought I'd fling that out there to keep someone from making the same mistake I made ten years ago.

One Change that made the biggest difference in the brake feel was putting on a set of steel braided lines instead of the stock rubber lines

14 bolt rears were used for a long time until the move to the AAM axles. Could probably move the spring pads on an axle from a 3/4 ton chevy from the early 2000s that came from gm with disks and a parking brake. I looked at doing this back when I did the rear brake swap on my k5 but the early 2000's stuff was new and expensive then.

We had talked about this a few weeks back. People were making this rear disc swap using parts that didn't utilize a parking brake, which in my opinion is a bad idea and frankly not an option for me. I had mentioned the old caddy calipers but unfortunately I feel they are too small for the job on a 3/4 ton or bigger truck. The D52's were just never meant for that kind of abuse.

I confirmed this over the weekend doing a rear brake job on my fathers 2001 3/4 ton pickup with a 14 bolt rear. It has massive 13" rear rotors and the calipers are literally twice the size of the little D52's. This is the setup really needed for a rear disc swap on a heavy duty truck. Otherwise I'll stick to my drums.

I agree, swapping the entire rear and relocating the spring and shock mounts would be the easiest way to do it if the brakes can't be adapted to the older 14 bolt rears.

To add, your rear e-brake discs won't have the holding power that a drum setup has, which is why it's not working that well for you. That's very typical of an e-brake that uses the rear disc pads. The old caddy calipers were unique that way, as well as your early rear disc cars like the 3rd and 4th gen F bodies up through 1997, they just didn't work all that well. That's why GM converted all their rear disc cars to an internal drum e-brake setup that rides inside the disc. But they are still a popular swap because they are so easy to adapt on older vehicles.

Re: 1ton upgread parts?

Great resource for rear brake upgrades: http://www.tsmmfg.com/

I just scored a set of the big bore rear e-brake calipers from a '76 Eldorado, probably going to get their kit for my '93 10.5" 14 Bolt that I'm building for my '83.
