Re: My new project 86 Silverado
you can get away without using a c-notch with a flip kit if you remove the bumpstop and bracket...as long as you don't haul too much you'll be o.k.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
If you are doing a flip in the rear, you absolutely need to remove the bumpstop, or it will be hitting constantly, and ride like doo doo. If you are doing a C notch, the bracket gets cut out.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
those bolt in c-notches just seems like it would make the rear of the frame flex at that point...

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
flipped the cab over to work on the bottom, the PO butchered the tunnel, I assume to change to the TH400 that came with it.
I need to buy a grinder, a DA or hand sanding is not going to cut it... will be installing LCA's tomorrow... like I said before, I have both a 10 bolt, and a 12 bolt rear... trying to decide which one to go with since i'm waiting on the flip kit... decisions, decisions

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
What's the gears in the 10 and 12 bolt? Posi?
Looking good man, sucks the PO tore the tunnel up to only make it harder on you, but think of the positive something else you get to learn for experience Posted via Mobile Device

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
thanks
Both are 3.08's unfortunately no posi... the patch tunnel has enough overlap so I can seal it, and bolt/screw it back down to cover the hole. never know when I may need to get at the transmission or something... but who knows, i may weld it back together we'll see when I get to that point

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Well I have a 12 bolt in mine with 3.42 gears and I love it, people have asked which is better out of the 10 or 12 bolt and from what I've seen it's gone both ways. So I think it's more of person preference more than anything.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
More than enough lol! Supposedly from what a friends dad of mine told me is that back when our trucks were built they had a heavy duty rear end, with 8 leafs on each I think the typical leafs on a truck of our generation was 10 or 12 total but as you can tell there's 16 lol on the 12 bolt

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
since i have a 10 bolt that came with my truck, and a spare 12 bolt out of a Burb, I have been doing some reading...
it appears that a truck 10 bolt has a larger pinion than a truck 12 bolt, a car 12 bolt is stronger than a truck 12 bolt. so basically a truck 10 bolt is built stronger than a truck 12 bolt...will have to keep researching to see if it is worth the swap. if the truck 12 bolt is weaker, then i'll keep my 10 anyone confirm this?

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Quote:
mine will make 500+ ft/lbs of torque from idle through 3000rpm. Peak HP will be around 4-4500 rpm... not too shabby, since the rebuild kit for one is only 700.00+, and the motor cost me about 300-400 i think. will be using a TH400 tranny, that's why I am asking if a truck 10 bolt is stronger than a truck 12 bolt, i'll probably twist one in half with 500+ ft/lbs of TQ all Olds engines are the same width between the motor mounts, it is the deck height that is different, the big block is taller... so same motor mounts for the small block fits the big... depending on circumstances, may need to use the two forward holes on the block to mount the motor mounts. can use car or truck frame mounts, just have to use the motor mounts that fit the frame mounts(they have to match depth of the motor mounts etc.)... and of course will have to set the engine in, and figure out where you will need to mount the frame mount, may have to drill holes, or weld them in. in my situation, since my truck is all apart, i'll set the engine/tranny in, and make sure i have it far enough back so my driveshaft fits, then i'll bolt in the frame mounts, and tranny crossmember and i'll be good to go.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
At least y'all's is somewhat predictable in Texas it can be 80 1 day and next day it be 60 and pouring down rain, it's safe to say Texas has it's own Eco system
Looking forward to the progress when you get it, we all have to deal with the elements one way or another. Posted via Mobile Device
