Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Yes, the one you have on your truck is the same that I removed from my 87. The core supports are the same 81-87 for all 1/2 and 3/4 trucks (probably for 1 ton as well). I know your connection is probably just like the one in these photos. Sorta tells me the duct I have on my shelf here, which is from this core support (87), is what you need. Although I guess the air cleaner could be different, which could change everything as far as length needed etc.

The opening in the core support is the same. The connection adapter I have is different - just an open sleeve which I assume the duct fits over or into - not fancy like yours.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Joining late, you guys just about have everything figured out, but here are my comments:

a) You are correct, ducts snap over the air cleaner base and over the "birdcage" in the radiator support. No clamps.

b) Big block (454) air cleaners had a larger snorkel opening than the small block versions.

c) The difference you are seeing at the radiator support is that one of those is the typical "birdcage", which attaches to the duct on one end and has the protective cover on the other; the other device is an optional "water separator", available by selecting the specific RPO (I don't recall off the top of my head what the RPO was). That's why you won't see that on every truck (should be pretty rare, actually).

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

For the 89-91 Suburban/K5 you can not use the normal round core support that goes through a hole, there is a headlamp there. That's why it has a different connector that draws air from below, and it actually bolts on since it has no where to slip through and twist. Anyone that has the "burb clip swap" and kept the factory air cleaner and duct, should have that. I think.

I've learned quickly that I'm wrong a lot though.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Thanks Keith. I finally got a p/n from the local Chevy dealer (a minor miracle)(discontinued, of course) - 14024596. Vintage parts has them so I guess I will order one and give it a go. I hope my plain round connector at the core support is all I need to make it work.

Tucson, this how my sleeve looks on my 83,basically the same as Randys pic except I cut off the front flat plate that sits in front of the adapter to give a ram air effect at speed.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

I got the intake duct from Vintage Parts and it fits perfectly. P/N 14024596
About $32 delivered - not bad, considering the little piece of crank vent hose was $43.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Is there anyway you can get your parts guy to get the big block air cleaner hose part number? Mine is a '85 so no TBI, I know they are different. Thanks!

Sounds like we might be able to get these after all.

Anyone ever used the stock air cleaner to make a dual air snorkel air intake? I have always wanted to make one that was stock looking. I know the a\c compressor will be in the way but I am switching to a serpentine conversion so I should be good to go...

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

That must be something new. I bought my air duct from them last year. Just went online with my GM OEM part number and followed the prompts with my credit card - no problem with the order or delivery. AIRC there was a different pricing schedule for dealers vs. retail customers.

Re: Air Cleaner Intake Hose and Clamps

Just to follow up on some stuff:
I thought I would post a pictures of the TBI air cleaner snorkels.
The longer one is the 87-88 one.
The shorter one is the 89-91 one.

Classic Parts sells the 87-88 one. I purchased one for my truck. I took a TBI aircleaner with out extra holes in it, and took out the hot air valve stuff and patched the hole. So now my 83 suburban with a 454, only gets air from the front core support, I also shaved the potective front cover off like the guy earlier in the thread did.

If anyone wants the 89-91 one, let me know.

Received my LMC order today. Took it out of the box and thought it was made wrong as the 4" end to the core has a slight angle to it and that angle is not in the same plane as the end that connects to air cleaner.

HOWEVER, installed it and it was a perfect fit. Nice and tight on both ends, the ramps/catches fit where they were supposed to.

Yay! No more sucking in hot, post-radiator air.
