Steering Column Question

I bought a late 70's/early 80's tilt for my '75 Sierra and had it shipped to me. When I unpacked it, I saw that the splined steering shaft had collapsed, presumably during shipping since the box was all jacked up. The rest of the column appears to be fine...

Here's the question: Can this shaft be pulled out? Or did Fed Ex (and the seller's packing) cost me $125? Thanks!

I'd like to be funny and say i think you go the shaft!
but i really think you didn't....(get the lower half)
one style has outside clamp, another bolt going threw it
don't think it would all tuck up there

Re: Steering Column Question

Haha, thanks. So there's nothing wrong with the column? I just need to get the clamp style "lower" shaft?

I'm sure the spline should be out, with a flat side

I had that clamp off before, and yeah, that spline part should stick out further.

Re: Steering Column Question

I figured as much. So can it be pulled back out to where it should be?

Re: Steering Column Question

I know they collapse some, but not there, not with the clamp on
I know when removed from the steering box the
solid part will slide up the space from the rubber to the clamp bolt
enough to replace rag joint!
(better pic ,missed the green arrow in the dumbnail lol)

Re: Steering Column Question

Ok, I feel like I'm not explaining myself well enough... Lemme try this again.

The red arrow indicates how much of the splined shaft should be showing:

The blue arrow shows just how much of the splined shaft on my column has collapsed:

My question: Is there a way to pull it back out to the appropriate length?

Re: Steering Column Question

Take off that bearing retainer on the tip and pull out the shaft with pliers. You should be good to go then

With the exception of the tilt feature, it looks near identical to my existing column.

if you get the shaft and the clamp, slide it on a bit, tighten and pull
I'd ask seller if it was like that
or did that get dropped causing that
never had to pull it out , not sure
I'm still wondering why it's in !

Re: Steering Column Question

Looks like the top shaft is poking out too so the whole assembly may be jogged up

Re: Steering Column Question

I pulled the bearing and retainer off to try pulling the shaft out some, no luck. Maybe If I try tapping the sfatf from the steering wheel end using a rubber mallet?

Yep, it tils just fine, everything is tight. Turn signal cam is in good shape too.
