Fuel doors on a short bed?

Why would there be these locking doors on a 69 gmc short bed? There is one on each side of the bed. The only gas tank on this truck is the one behind the seat.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

Well, not sure about your truck but my 72 SWB had these above the parting line, dealer installed auxiliary fuel tanks.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

Some trucks had "saddle drums".......I wish my gas tank was not in the cab.

It was dealer installed so it would not be on the SPID. I don't think your doors are in the right position for dealer installed tanks. Maybe someone tried to install them some time in the last 40+ years.

Lee H.

I'd like to have the extra stowage behind the seat and sitting on 21 gallons of a highly volatile and flammable liquid.....hmm.....there might be a reason tanks aren't located there anymore. LOL

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

It's a mini tool stowage box, lol. I don't know how you could fill a tank through one of those doors, unless the tank hung below the bottom of the fenders. It may be the angle the pic was taken...but the wheel does not look centered in the wheel well, so I would inspect for a cut down LWB frame.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

thats what i thought too, the vin on the door and the spid match. frame seems uncut. is there a code stamping on the frame somewhere that i can verify it was a shortbed frame?

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

I had saddle tanks on my 70 GMC short, the filled under the wheel wells, it sucked in the winter, I had to chip off 4" of I've to get to the gas cap. The filler was about the same level as those doors, it had to be for saddle tanks.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

If there is nothing behind those doors I would make some storage boxes. Does not need to be to big, jumper cables on one side and some tools on the other.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

Check the SPID for the wheelbase 115= Short Bed, most folks dont think to check that when they buy a SWB, but I have run across some 127's in the wheelbase and the guys swore up and down it was a short bed.

I had the same door on a 72, but it was higher for saddle tanks.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

Are there any center stake holes? That's the easiest way to find a cut down long bed. Your SPID codes to be a true short bed but in 40-45 years the bed could have been changed.

They are they so that you can inspect and lube the front bushing on the leaf spring.

I wouldn't sweat it....Remove and repair them if you decide to repaint the truck.

Re: Fuel doors on a short bed?

Maybe at one point in time there were side steps cut in the bed. PO didn't like them and didn't know how to weld so when he saw a truck with these fuel doors and thought it was a great idea to cover the step hole. That's my guess.
