Mystery Spring in Oil Filter Can - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Went to swap out my original cannister style oil filter today in my 67 with a 283. When I pulled the filter out, there was a spring about 3/4 in. wide by 2 in. long sitting at the bottom of the can. Any one have any ideas where this spring would have come from and why it would be just sitting at the bottom of my oil filter? Should have took a picture.

IIRC that spring holds the cartridge up to the block. It has to be there to mate the filter to the filter base. It's been a long time since I changed one.

I think Chief is correct it slides down over the bolt before the cartridge goes in. Been a long time for me too...

I would also agree with that. The last one I seen was on a 66 Corvette and it had a spring in the bottom of the canister that went on before the filter.

May want to convert to spin-on filter later.

That's what I thought at first too. But the spring would have to rest against the filter . It doesn't touch anything so it just sits there. Both the filter I pulled out and the new one have the hole at top land bottom that is much bigger than the spring. I wonder if filter styles have changed or just getting the wrong filter. Converting to a screw on type is probably a good idea.

I wouldn't swap. The Cartridge style has more filtering area. Other than being marginally less messy, there is no real advantage to swapping to a spin-on. See "How to Hotrod your Small Block Chevy". In fact the late Ecotech 4-cylinders have gone back to cartridge filters,

there is supposed to be a cupped washer that hits the filter

Probably a large washer that fits the canister bolt would work but I think I remember one in that box, no promises though so don't hold your breath...
