ignition switch wiring question

I have searched the 67-72 forums and couldn't find this particular issue. Sorry if it has been covered somewhere.
I bought my 72 from some kids who supposedly bought it from the original owner. Anyway, the ignition was wired with a push button. Turn the key to on and then push the button to start. It was this way when the kids bought it. I replaced the ignition switch but it still won't start with the key. I have to turn the key on but use the push button. It's not a big deal but I would like it to work properly. Any advice on what I need to check for? It appears they tapped into the fuse box at the cigarette lighter for power and run the wire from the push button to the starter solenoid. None of the wires in the harness appear to be cut.
Thanks
Craig, aka tarafied1

Re: ignition switch wiring question

The factory uses a 12 gauge purple wire from the S term on the ign. switch to the S term on the selinoid. If it is an automatic it goes through the neutral switch.

Re: ignition switch wiring question

yes it is an automatic TH350
it appears all the wires are in tact. Maybe the neutral safety switch is bad. I will have to check that out, that did not occur to me until you posted that
thanks

Re: ignition switch wiring question

Well believe it or not, the purple wire was on the wrong post of the solenoid. It's been converted to HEI so maybe they goofed when they eliminated the yellow wire? Anyway, it works now
