I realized something very special today...

...and that is the other thing my truck is to me.

My truck is a lot to me: classic, hobby, powerful tool, connection to my youth, connection to my father. Yet tonight I realized something else.

I watched "The Omega Man" on TCM, one of my favorite movies. The movie was made in 1971, the same year my truck was born or at least, gestating (it's a '72) and nearing its birth. My truck is a connection back to that time in the world.....and realizing that struck me special.

When my truck is running again, I'm going to take it back to where it all began, to where my dad first saw it. That car lot is long gone but a gravel parking lot is still there. I'm going to park it, walk across the street to about where my dad would have stood when he first saw it, and take a picture. I'll post that on here for you guys.

Re: I realized something very special today...

Your post is touching, and timely.

I have been thinking about moving my truck down the road, both to free up some working capital and to reduce the fleet a bit.

But - when I see it sitting in the parking lot at work - I just can't pull the trigger. Not only is it "cute" but there is a lot of history there. I ordered this truck, followed it down the assembly line when it was built, drove it off the end of the line myself. That's not something you can just reproduce or restore into another vehicle.

That connection you refer to a bygone era is real and tangible.

Same kid; same truck:

Re: I realized something very special today...

I like your idea about taking the truck back to the beginning. I was able to do that with both my truck and my dad's GTO.

Here's my truck sitting at the dealership where it was delivered, 27 years after the fact:

-and Dad's GTO:

The former Royal Pontiac dealership, 400 N Main in Royal Oak Michigan, where Dad's GTO was delivered new specifically for him to race for Pontiac Motor Division.

The car just turned 49 years old last week.

Re: I realized something very special today...

I'm looking forward to your pics and other comments on this thread. But for now...I think the truck is sticking around for a while.

GREAT Thread my friend! It's no joke when they say Chevy Runs Deep! I wish GM would get it, and make everything right here in the USA. There is something special about these trucks and the era they were made in.

My two favorite movies are Omega Man and Outlaw Josie Wales!
