67 c10 2wd to 4wd

I'm only 15 and this is my first post. My grandfather has gave me his old shop truck to fix for my first vehicle. It has been sitting for quite a while aye 20 good years in Colorado. I should be going to get it this upcoming summer. Anyway the c10's two wheel drive is unacceptable up here in Maine during the long cold winters. This would be my daily driver so I would like to convert to 4wd. I now it would be the easiest to swap the body onto a different frame. This is what I intend to do but I can only find square body donor trucks up here. And one 1972 c20 4x4. So 1 would these trucks work or are there other ways to do this. 2 is it worth it. Any input is accepted and appreciated.

It's not a simple bolt on operation, but you can swap front spring hangers and shackle hangers onto a 2WD frame, but I would focus on getting it running and driving reliably before tackling a 4WD conversion. I drove my 70 GMC through South Dakota winters with extra weight on the bed and a decent set of tires for a few years. It's way worse to be wrenching on a truck in a snow bank because it won't run right than slipping and sliding a little bit with a 2WD.

Food for thought, if you're going to convert anyways, check out Off Road Designs and DIY4x websites for an idea of decent priced parts and front spring stuff for these trucks.

Welcome to the cite. I was 15 when I first got my 67 though i started with a K10, it's been a few years now. The only help I can give is some good pics of a 4x4 front end.

Re: 67 c10 2wd to 4wd

Welcome to the site first of all, we are glad you are here. There are tons of info on this swap and many other things to help you on the way on your truck project. First things first. You need to ask and answer some questions of yourself.how bad do you need the 4whhel drive? Is it a need or a want? Two totally separate things. Do you have the tools needed to do this kind of major undertaking? Do you have the skills needed to take on this massive of a project? If you answered no to either of the last two, then my next question is Are you kin to or friends with someone who is able or has the tools/place to do this type of project. This is gonna be a project of the size I am not sure your completely aware of. First thing in may be the easiest to take the truck down to the frame just so you can get to everything easier. The motor needs to come out and of course the trans. Then the front suspension and crossmember. Then when you have the new stuff found you will have to have it all cleaned up when your ready for mock up.
You had asked about the square body 4x4 stuff it will work as far as the running gear, some have used the frames in a bind but be aware that the mount that hold the cab are different heights and may have to be moved to make everything line up right. that is another issue where the experiance won't scare you, but then again maybe youth won't either. I am not a Big 4xguy[ but the tags on my shirt say 4xl if that helps]but like most on here we will be glad to help a brother out and if there is anything I can do to help or advise holler. Jim

Re: 67 c10 2wd to 4wd

Why not look for a NAPCO truck for all the conversion parts.

Re: 67 c10 2wd to 4wd

Thanks for the replies It sounds like it might be staying 2wd for a while due to resources and experience. Thanks Seth
