My new crew

I picked up this 91 crew cab this past summer, watched it setting by the side of the road for sale for over a month and never stopped. I knew if I did and he was even halfway reasonable on the price it'd be coming home with me.

I finally stopped and talked to the owner, his dad bought it new, pulled a 5th wheel for several years and then sold it to his son who put a flatbed on it and used it as a work truck for several years. So a one family truck, minimal rust, very straight body, all the bells and whistles. Drove it, liked it, made an offer and brought it home.

It's been pretty well maintained mechanically, recently built trans, no major leaks, all in all, I think I did alright. Don't care for the paint scheme, but the clear is peeling, so I'll be doing something about that in the future anyway.

I know it might ruffle some feathers, but seriously thinking about a SRW conversion, slight lift and 33s or 35s. I've looked for a crew for a few years now, and this is by far the nicest 4x4 I've found for the money.

Even had the owners manual, warranty booklet, and key tag in the glove box. Key tag still has the knockouts with the key codes on it, lists the original price as $27,250, and lists the factory colors, Mariner Blue and Steel Gray.

Unhappy Re: My new crew

Thanks! Already making plans for what I want to do with it, but am open to suggestions. I'm thinking a duramax and allison, and an 11.5 aam in the rear for the factory disc brakes would be a nice upgrade

Re: My new crew

For a diesel swap its hard to beat a 12 valve Cummins,They can make huge power and one of the easier diesels to swap in anything. On the rear axle if you find the right 14 bolt it should bolt right in and if you want disc they sell kits to change it over.

Re: My new crew

I drove the truck again yesterday, quick trip to fill up the driver's side tank after fixing the too long, kinked filler hose that was making it impossible to put in more than a pencil stream of fuel at a time. I'd leave them in there if it wasn't such a thirsty beast!

When I go diesel, I've pretty much decided to go Duramax. The 12 valve Cummins is a good engine, just not my preference. I've been driving and working on Duramax trucks since 04, and I love 'em. It won't be as easy, it will be more expensive, and it will take longer, but in the end it will be what I want.

As for the rear axle, I think the AAM 11.5 is a bit tougher than a 14 bolt, and I have a line on a few locally with lower mileage. 650 complete from a local yard, with 65,000 miles, factory discs and parking brake provisions. Used 14 bolts are going for 300-400 around here, most of the time mileage is unknown, the direct fit ones are getting some age on them, and then I'd still have to convert it to discs. I'm still in the planning/gathering stage, but so far I'm really leaning towards the AAM.

Need to track down a headliner board to recover and the plastic trim in the back cab corners, PO removed the whole board when the headliner started falling down and it's long gone.

Re: My new crew

Thanks for the link! Since I'm a glutton for punishment, and I hate paying others to do something If I'm capable, I'm planning to tackle the wiring myself, haha. Plus I already have EFI Live, and have tuned my 05 and some others, so that part shouldn't be too bad.

Now the tough part.....win the lottery so I can quit my day job and my side business fixing everyone else's trucks and focus on building my own!
