1968 AC Help.

Hey guys, I am getting ready to drop a 350 SBC on the 68 , the 68 truck has AC , but the small block does not have the compressor .

Right now the engine has the alternator on the passenger side , from picturs I have seen, the alternator goes on the driver side and compressor on the passenger side for these trucks ? Can anybody post up pics of your stock AC. Thanks!!

Re: 1968 AC Help.

You can probably find the correct alt. brackets real cheap and the 7 piece ac brackets fairly cheap on the parts board.

Re: 1968 AC Help.

The difference is the long and short water pumps. The long pump setup is a pass side alt, and the short is driver side alt. they use all different pulleys and brackets between the two types.

Re: 1968 AC Help.

Thanks! So pretty much if I want to run a stock bracket for my ac compressor. I have to get a short water pump, compressor bracket, alternator bracket that are all for a 67-68 small block chevy right ? The other pulleys stay the same ?

Re: 1968 AC Help.

Yes as long as your heads have the acc. holes which it looks like they do.

Re: 1968 AC Help.

You don't need the accessory holes in the heads if you use the original mounts with the short water pump.
Here is my 68,C-10 without the compressor mounted.
Most 60's car or truck mounts will work.

Re: 1968 AC Help.

I have this alternator set up on my 1972 which is odd, as my truck originally came with AC.
Yours was likely added as well, as it looks like you're missing the bolt hole for the bracket on the top..
I believe my motor to be a later year, as it's black, and the oil dip stick is on the passenger side.

Re: 1968 AC Help.

Correct me if i am wrong....but i don't think the 7 piece bracket is original for the 1968....

here is what i believe you should have. You might want to do more research.

the pic with the pump attached is a pic i got from Wes, at ClassicHeartbeat.com in Olympia, WA...

The picture I posted is not the original brackets! These are from a 65/66/67 Impala. And,the evaporator is from a 73/87 truck.I was converting my truck to the orifice tube expansion system when this pic was taken.
I didn't mean to miss-lead anyone.I just forgot to post all the information.
But everything does work.

If your fingers will go between the water pump and engine(going in from top), it is the long one. So, yours looks like the long one.
