Yah I've been out of the scene for a while but I got some things done to it the otherday. Been stretched pretty thin between work and family. Gotta get a thread going for the blazer here soon for sure before I get to far into it.

Re: Overdue build thread: INSIDIOUS '86 AKA AhsataN

Ok so it's been a a while. I've been busy with kids and school and work and freinds projects. But now I'm back and we can get this saga up to date. And you can see all the fun toys and stuff I've gotten since.

So where we left off. My 305 was dead in the water and to honest rebuild it and get it running right would honestly cost more than it was worth to repair the motor. So now with my truck dead in the water I convinced my old man that I needed his 377 and since he was running everything dodge that he didn't need it. So I mothballed the 305 after pulling my new parts off it and bought the 377 from my old man and put the cam and valve train on the 377. The 377 had the lt1 camel hump heads with acc holes and nice stainless 2.02 1.6 valves with a minor bowl blend and gasket match. I sold the TPI and installed my old school polished weiand high rise and my craigslist carb on. I also went up to my local speed shop and bought a Chinese procomp pro billet distributor on sale for $80. Had a spring kit and adjustable vacuum advance. Msd had just come out with the street fire distributor at the time and it was $150 in the stores. Was it crap? No more than any store brand stuff. I took my stock distributor apart which was worn and loose and took my recently bought cap/rotor and put them on the procomp. Threw the Chinese stuff away. Also put in my gm hei module instead of the Chinese one with plenty of heat sink sauce. I had kept the TPI accel distributor since it was new and took the gear off and put it on the procomp and shimed it's shaft lash to .019. Also the TPI distributor had a supercoil that I re used. And bam my Chinese distributor worked great for the four years it's been on my truck. I just recently well you'll see later...but anyways it worked great!

So now I threw I the motor and the stock original 700r4 (mistake) but I didn't know better. I got some 1.5 primary tube headers off a truck at a wrecking yard for $40 and then ordered a 3" pypes universal x pipe from summit for about $130. In the meantime I took my complimentary 5qts break in oil from my cam and broke in the engine for 25min open header. The local sheriff came by and watched for about five min since a local neighbor thought we were driving our race car around... So after the sheriff said "cool truck" and left I let it cool down and changed the oil and then did a running lash on the rockers. And tuned the idle and timing. At the time I could only get it to idle at 650-750 in gear and 1400rpm out of gear since I didn't exactly know how to fine tune timing and four corner idle on a lumpy cam. At the time I did what I knew which was set the timing at 12* initial and set the idle out of gear. Since then I've learned over time how to correctly set everything and it runs with 19* initial and lopes out if gear happily at 900-1100rpm with still a stock stall converter and stays alive at 550-700in gear. A big improvement. Back then I also didn't have a CD ignition box either.

So now with 2:73 gears a 140xxx mile 700r4 with stock stall and open headers I decided to go out for a drive. With my Freind Kyle in the seat we decided to go take a quick loop around the neighborhood and make sure everything functioned right. So no hood open header I idle towards the end of the driveway, as soon as I press the gas I light up the right rear tire for 20ft on accident. This holley makes my old quadrashat feel like a lazy turd and I definitely feel the difference in power lol. So I go down the neighborhood and some young teens prob about 15-16 out for a walk with thier girly friends, you know the type with saggy shorts and long shirts and sideways hats well I decided to see how these six kids would react if I snuck up on them...I accelerated down the road and put it in neutral and just as I was about to pass by them I put her to half throttle... I may as well have tossed grenades at them or tossed a bee nest. All jumped in the air to feet screamed like six year old girls and ran up the side of a grassy hill for a few feet then ummediay ly got tough and got pissed and all sorts of hang gestures. I was crying that I was laughing so hard and my friend almost lmao'd out the window. So I parked her and waited a horribly long three days for my exhaust from summit and installed it along with the re re reused purple hornies on the back. And she sounded niceeeeee.

That was with glass packs. The later mufflers and tailpipes are just incredible.

Re: Overdue build thread: INSIDIOUS '86 AKA AhsataN

Next chapter:
Having the engine in for a couple months and the cam broke in and the motor running right I added some comp magnum roller tip rockers and poly locks. I went with 1.6 on the intake and 1.52 on the exhaust. I bought two kits off craigslist for $75. I ordered a few ball pivots and one rocker to get them to my standards and sold the other set to my Freind to use on his fresh rebuilt 350 that only had a 266h10 crane cam.

The reason for the staggered ratio was to get the intake side duration to match the exhaust a little better. I also added Mallory 6al ignition box with the rev limiter set to 6100. I could lean the carb just a tad and was able to lean the idle mix and lower the idle from 1500rpm out of gear to to 1200rpm. Gas mileage improved some in the city as did the part throttle response, plug cleanliness and it just ran smoother overall. I did some racing with it for a while and the 700r4 held ok in stock form for a 400hp engine. About four months in I notice that it will slip 1-2 and 3rd. With the 2:73s it was fun to drop it to second from 60mph and haul ass down the hwy. was good enough to out accelerate a Lamborghini gaylardo spider from 55-80mph, the driver and me were both surprised! There was a old van filled with a family that was gawking making the van lean heavily over on the hwy looking at this Lamborghini. I was just getting on the hwy via carpool when I saw this bright yellow car. I decided to have some fun and came up a car length behind the van in the other lane. My gf in the seat and my Freind and his truck give car lengths ahead I decide to drop second gear and ROARRR past the van. As soon as I did I saw the van lean to the other side in my rear view as the whole family snapped thier necks to see what the ungodly sound was! I shifted to third and the Lamborghini came up next to me. I looked at him and he started getting on it. As soon as he did I dropped second on the column and mashed the gas all at the same time. I slingshot by and get into third and get to 80mph he starts driving by. Obviously The wind resistance was killing any acceleration rapidly. We slow down and he gives a thumbs up and my Freind says on the CB "did that just happen?!". A month later I got a 3:08 geared differential out if a really low mile truck that was sitting for years. The internals looked new still. The truck ran better in the city and accelerated slightly better but it was still a peg leg. But one fateful day I was at a stop light and another square owner with a rumble engine drive up next to me. Obviously we had to drag race otherwise we would look silly well we took off and I launched him and pulled two lengths and the light ahead went red. So we stopped again, this time when I went first to second and when I normally mash the pedal down the 700 r4 had enough of this sh!t. Just smacked the rev limiter and no more second or third gear. First and fourth still worked though. How did I drive back home? Lol well overdrive engages at 40mph and first topped out at 40+ lol. I floored it at lights then idled at 45 down the roads back home were I parked it for two months.
