402 timing question

I had to replace some collapsed lifters so I figured since I'm in this far I would pull all the goodies on the front. Now I have decided to get a gear drive for fun new noises. Do I need to remove the doohickee with the timing line on it and drop the oil pan (as I have read about) to access the timing cover for the gear drive ?
Thank you for your help and time.

never been this far into a engine but your not gonna learn until ya get dirty, right ? I don't even have a torque wrench yet, lol

Re: 402 timing question

The " doohickee" AKA harmonic balancer has to be removed. It is best to get a puller and a installer for this job. Do not take the advice of just beat it back on with a hammer and block of wood. It is hard on the thrust bearing.

You do not have to remove the oil pan on a big block but remember there are two up right bolts that go through the oil pan into the timing cover that need to be removed.

Good luck and have fun,
Tom
