I am replacing the tailgate on my truck and found one in pretty good shape for $45. The problem is that someone welded all the trim mounting holes closed. I want to add the trim back on but don't want to drill out all the holes again. Are there clips that can be used that are glued on?

Ironically the tailgate has buttons screwed on for a snap on tonneau cover that they did not take off and weld closed. Now I will have to get those welded.

There are a few people that have used 3M trim tape to mount their body trim. Some say it holds up okay. I don't see the irony in the tonneau cover snaps though. It seems someone wanted a tonneau and didn't want the trim. The tape is a good way to decide if you want the trim before you paint it, that way you can leave the holes filled if you don't like the look.

I want to keep the look of the truck original and like the look of the trim so I do know that I want to keep it. I want to make sure that it does not fall off. I know the 3M tape is good but it does not have much on the trim to hold on to and I don't want it showing.

Are the original clips bolt on or pressed in?

I purchased a new tailgate and drilled the trim holes, not difficult if you go that way. Good luck.

I can't find it right now, but I've seen some vendor that makes stick-on clips for moulding. Check with GMC Paul, Classic Heartbeat or some of the other board vendors. They're out there.

LMC definitely has them for the side moldings...

The right and left pieces use the moveable pop-in clips. Just re-drill close to original holes. The center piece will be the tough part.

I found some for the side moldings but not the tailgate. I suppose I could make some by cutting off the tab and using 3M tape.

use the tape and put a small screw on each end so it cant fall off if the tape lets go.
