More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

1. How should the studs be removed? Are they worth saving? If not, removal isn't an issue.

2. Recommendations for stud replacement (e.g., stud type and where to purchase)?

3. Recommendations for bolts to head replacement (e.g., bolt type and where to purchase)?

4. I will be adding the heat shield for the stove pipe. What bolt/hardware is used for mounting the heat shield, and are these parts available?

Sorry for all the questions. New to me and want to get it right. Thank you.

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

I replaced the studs but canīt remember where i bought them, reused the bolts to the heads. The shield/stove is bolted with 2 of the exhaust manifold bolts, from the front of engine it is the 3rd and 7th bolt.
I have learned from this forum that the heat stove parts are not reproduced so might be hard to find.

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

Thanks 68. I read a message that seemed to say the bolts used to mount the heat shield were different. Do you know if yours is the stock set up?

The set up is very difficult to find. Come up every now and again. I don't need them. Can I ask what type of screw you're using to mount your pipe to the shield, and if it's factory correct?

BTW, I like the white shield. What type of finish? Really, that entire block is super and all appears stock. Sweden!!!!!!!!.........Excellent.

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

I donīt know if it is a stock set up but it is the way it came when I bought the truck and it looked pretty much untouched.

The screw holding the shield and pipe together is just an ordinary screw from a auto parts store or a hard ware store so it is not factory correct. Canīt remember if it was a screw there or if it was missing when I restored the truck.

The shield is actually silver finish and it is just a heat resistant rattle can paint.

I wanted the stockish look but it is actually a .100 over 454. I moved over all the externals like intake, exhaust, carb from the 402 that came with the truck.

Went over to California and brought it home to Sweden in 2004 and did a complete fram off restoration.

Thanks

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

In addition to my vision faltering in my 50s, I've always been shade blind "color blind". Looking at your spark plug heat shields gets me thinking. I'm unable to verify these even came with the 71-72 BBC. Everywhere shield is shown in the parts book, BBC is excluded.

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

The shield could easlily be taken for being white in the pic, BTW Iīm also one of the circa 10% of all men being color blind.

The spark plug heat shields comes from the 1973 454 engine that is now in the truck, at least some of them. Canīt remember clearly since it was almost 10 years ago since I did the rebuild but I think there was some spark plug heat shields on the 402 as well. Will take a look at old rebuild pictures when I have access to the them, on a trip away from home right now.

Thought the spark plug heat shields would be a nice addition but it is probably not factory correct for a 71-72.

As I said earlier that is not the factory correct screw. You can see the screw holding the pieces together that was in the truck before restoration in the pics. Not sure though that is the factory correct screw.

Re: More exhaust manifold questions - 71-72 BBC

May have been just a phillips tap screw. Just guessing, but it sounds right.
