Re: 54 GMC 5 window, s10 frame, 5.3 turbo

well finished a few things today.. cut to length and welded my bars up for my 4-link... notched out my upper crossmember and welded a 5" pipe in so my driveline will clear when laid out.. then spent a few hours with the good ol' photo shop finishing up my shop logo for the door... turned out pretty awesome if i dont say so myself!

ended up scoring a good deal on 3.902 bore -22.4cc dish probe forged pistons, eagle 2.5 forged rods, and eagle forged 4.000 stroker crank... all this will put this baby up to 6.3 liters and my compression ratio around stock 9.5 ish with my heads... 75lb bosch injectors with keene bell boost a pump also on the way... dammit gunna need a bigger turbo!! this motor has gotten so ridiculous im not even sure what hp im shooting for anymore.. seen stock setups with aggressive cams making 600 na... boosted goes all the way from 800 to 1000.. im thinking im shooting for 650 to 700 depending on what my turbo will let me.

still waiting on the right rear end.. finally found one, in the same city as me, right gears, 8.5 and a posi with disk brakes but of course hes the one guy in the world that thinks his **** is gold... 800 bucks my ass.. couldnt talk him down a bit.. found another with 4.56 gears, 8.2 with a mini spool but im trying to keep this thing from turning into a full out drag truck!

Re: 54 GMC 5 window, s10 frame, 5.3 turbo

great looking project! What air intake is that in post #5 on the first page? with the fridge in the background. Is that just a filter clamped onto the throttle body or is that a complete set up with a MAF sensor behind it?

Re: 54 GMC 5 window, s10 frame, 5.3 turbo

Try Lingenfelter for your cam, I'm sure they will have a take out with litters etc.

You asked about a rr end. I found that a 67-69 Chevy truck either 2 or 4x is only 1/2 wider than a stock AD and they can be had with 3:73 and posit that should work well with the 4l60 you are running.

Sweet build...subscribed.

its just the stock truck intake with no maf and a filter, getting switched out for ls6 intake... Been forever and a million years since ive worked on my truck, after fighting with the parts i bought finally got all my motor stuff here..

got a ton of time on my hands now that my job was eliminated so i plan on among my other hundred projects really amping it up on this truck..

ill keep lingenfelter in mind for my cam, gunna research who knows there **** about custom grinds for turbos... ended up ditching the idea of a big single and now going to use the twin 62's one on each bank..

my hp number has gone up quite a bit, after talking with a guy up in canada with the same setup and twin 76's puttin 1200 to the wheels with just 15lbs..

obviously my turbos will have to push more boost then that to make those numbers but im shooting for bout 800 at wheels now..

pistons were backordered for ever, just recently got them and am now getting my motor finished up.. once i get that ill be in full force again..

i didnt realize the 67-69 rears were only 1/2 wider... i plan on running white wall slicks in the back so i almost need it narrower but ill defineatley keep that in mind in my search...

im really leanin towards ford 8.8, but my bud said the offset on his looked like it was way way off..

ive got a fair share of moola in the engine now to be honest i lost track awhile ago, i have alot of the turbo stuff already, but with the twins, fuel pumps, intercooler, piping and various other stuff thats left i should be under the 10 grand mark when its all done.

I had a 54 Buick Super years ago and I loved that dash. If I could find one similar I would think about a custom dash myself. And that Desoto dash is interesting. It almost looks like you could adapt the entire gauge cluster into the stock truck dash as well.

Re: 54 GMC 5 window, s10 frame, 5.3 turbo

Alright guys been some time since i updated again.. so far weather has been keeping me pretty busy in the garage considering im not snowmobiling this year.

Name: 149.jpg
Views: 1051
Size: 63.9 KB

I've finally gotten to the point with this truck where i dont consider it a rat anymore.. my original intention for the truck was to be cheap junkyard 5.3 turbo with 4 link done in short period of time.. with the direction im going now i can assume its gunna take some time... and more money.

I pulled the cab and box off again to redo my mounts i cobbled in quickly the first time, i then proceeded to heat all the crappy undercoating off the frame... what a pita. i found heating the metal behind the undercoating made it easy to scrape off.. i then took a wire wheel to the whole frame and boxed every inch i could find with 1/8".. tied it together with a hoop for my front radiator mount.

Name: 020.jpg
Views: 1991
Size: 56.6 KB

i then plotted out every inch of my frame onto graph paper, and every object.. i had been worried about welding this 4 link for awhile then, and knew if i was going to be pushing an honest 800 whp it would need to be right. i researched as much as i could on instant centers, and after graphing it on paper, measuring mounting points, and making it semi adjustable i feel releifed to say its finally done. what im hoping for is something i can launch at the dragstrip, and still be able to autocross.. hopefully having this triangulated setup adjustable will give me best of both worlds..
i then built mounts for my air tank and compressor, and ran my lines in 1/2" and 3/8 copper.. 1/2 " is a pain in the ass even with the correct bender, i found the bending spring easiest.

Re: 54 GMC 5 window, s10 frame, 5.3 turbo

now i had to put the cab and box back on the truck so i could build my front fender mount and radiator mounts.. i decided to scrap the stock lower control arms and instead use tubular lowers as i can pick up a set with new bushings for about the same price as replacing the bushings and balljoints.. figured why not..
Name: 191.jpg
Views: 839
Size: 29.9 KB
i also needed to see how well my measuring was and if my cab was going to fit with the motor and tranny between the rails... to my surprise everything slipped right back into place perfect... i was also told that the stock 5.3 oilpan would not work on s10 frame... soo not true clears perfectly with more adjustment left..

Nice Build...had the same thoughts when i started my truck...just a quick cheap turbo build, i don't have a fully built motor but all the required turbo accessories really add up.
