6 bolt to 5 bolt swap

i am new to this posting stuff so be patient with me , in 1981 I built a 1967 gmc sb step side ,at that point I used a 72 as a donor ,it was in a pile in local scrap yard ,cars on top of it ,but any how all 5 bolt parts switched no problem ie spindles ,brakes ,ball joints and rear axles
I will post a pic of that ,but over the years I began a new one as my 1967 was totaled less than a year later ,but I still have the pieces
now my question is why doesn't any body know that you can install 1973 -87 parts on this ,I just installed the rear axles 31.5 into my 1970 from the 73 ,changed the ball joints to 73 and installed the spindles ,my 1973 was almost on its way to scrap ,I had it loaded on trailer and decided to keep for now
I searched for hrs because I believed the rumours that this wont swap ????
Like I said has nobody else tried this ? I did this in the 80s and it worked
Please give me some feed back on this

It is common to use 73-87 parts for a 5 lug conversion. Do a search on here and you will find lots of info on it.

Re: 6 bolt to 5 bolt swap

Well, you MIGHT get away with putting the 73 5 lug rear axles in but it puts the bearing in the wrong area on the axle if it is in the shorter 67-mid year 70 housing and there may be issues with the brake shoes. The rear axles in 67-about mid year 70 are a little shorter. Some 70 axles are the same length as the 67-69 and some are the same length as the 71 up. There are threads about this on here, here's a few..

I agree with the balljoints.

hmmmm ,guess I got lucky drums on and all lines up,but consider this ,a new part number was created for these axles that off set bearing placement to a new surface away from pitting so you can reuse axle with new bearing ,also am going to use all 73 ps box centre link and tie rods

Re: 6 bolt to 5 bolt swap

I didn't even notice you were new, and near to me. Welcome aboard.
I have a 70 as well just about completed a 2 1/2 year restoration on it. It's been in paint jail for 1 1/2 years now and is being paroled soon.

Here is one thread on the conversion you were asking about http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...68&postcount=4

Re: 6 bolt to 5 bolt swap

I used an 84 power steering box, all other parts are 1970 vintage.
