Testing a tach

Can I test a tach cluster on my 90 gmc it has hei but the coil is separate from the distributor I have an originat tach wire harness that has not been cut I realize that I need to ground the cluster and get power to the tach but then then leaves the brown wire does it go to the dist or the coil any help will be great.

I have done similar stuff on a newer cluster. I believe mine was a brown wire as well. I went to the junkyard grabbed the connector, hacked it up, tied all the power wires together and all the grounds together and hooked those up to the battery.

The tach gets hooked up to the negative terminal of the coil and wired directly into the cluster. In the diagram below, green is the signal wire.
