Re: 71' C10 Cheyenne Super Build

Took the truck on it's maiden voyage today. Ran great got lots of looks and thumbs ups. Pretty excited to finish it now. Still needs a lot of small things but at least I can drive it now. Also a big thanks to MREIN3 for sandblasting my tailgate hardware for me! I should be able to get that on by this weekend now.

Dang. Snow on the ground still. I have been wearing short sleeved shirts for a month now. I dont want to hear from you in july and August, though!

Nice truck, btw. I parted out a 72 custom deluxe in the same color combo a few years ago.

Yeah it's been the first warm (relatively) week here in Minnesota since last fall. Everybody is starting to pull their toys out of hibernation.

Got the wood bed all cut and mocked up this weekend. Going to be pretty nice when it is all stained.

Re: 71' C10 Cheyenne Super Build

I haven't posted in a while but the truck is pretty much buttoned up. Some minor things here and there but for the most part it is done. I got married in September and we were able to get some pretty good pics.

Re: 71' C10 Cheyenne Super Build

Well I sold the EZ EFI unit because it never quite ran the way I thought it should. I decided to give the new FITECH EFI unit a try after all the rave reviews on the internet so far and I can honestly say it's much better than EZ EFI has been for me. First of all the install was absolute cake compared to the EZ EFI. Only took me about 1.5 hours to install the kit, but I did already have the fuel system plumbed from the previous setup. The FITECH unit fired up on the first turn and idled very well right out of the box. As an engineer I love FITECH's ability to datalog, something the FAST unit was missing that I thought it should have. I will probably do a more in depth review after it gets warmer out but I am very happy so far. I need to clean up the wiring but here is a quick pic.

Went camping this weekend and took a few pics. Truck ran great with the new EFI. No issues on the 150 mile round trip.

Be interested to see how the EFI shakes out over the long run.

Re: 71' C10 Cheyenne Super Build

Thanks for the compliments. The color is GM Torch Red which I liked a little bit better than the older GM red on these trucks.

It seems people are very interested in the EFI system. If you havn't read the full thread I originally had EZ EFI and did not have a good experience trying to get that working correctly. I have about 600 miles on the FITech system now and I love it. The initial install was super easy. The only install problem I ran into was I ran a power wire too close to one of the spark plug wires and the truck would randomly shut off every couple minutes. Being an electrical engineer I did a little digging around and the input power to the ECU was very noisy. I re-routed the power line and I have had no issues since.

As far as driveability goes the truck idles better than it ever has and accelerates smoothly. The acceleration was where the EZ EFI struggled greatly. The truck would run fine for 10 miles or so and then the EZ EFI would for some reason try to trim out too much fuel and it would hesitate on partial throttle. FItech has none of these issues and required no tuning to get up and running. I have tweaked a few small things to areas I thought could be improved but that was just me being picky. The tuneability of the FITech is also much better than the EZ EFI because they number of paramters you can view on the handheld is much greater. The FItech handheld also has a datalogging capability so you can view a chunck of your driving and look at it later.

I should note that I have an in-tank high pressure fuel pump and a custom fuel tank under the bed. I did not need to purchase the fuel command center so that saved me quite a bit of work. I have read some people having issues with command center venting but I can't comment on any of that. If I had to do it again I would purchase FItech in a heartbeat. Super easy install and works great for a throttle body fuel injection solution.
