TH350 to NP205 Adapter bearing is it needed

Is the bearing in the adapter between the TH350 and NP205 needed, I was told to remove it and don't put it back in because they did away with it in later models because of problems. Any help or info would be great!

Re: TH350 to NP205 Adapter bearing is it needed

Sounds like pure hog wash. I see more issues having less support than having extra. I never had any issues with a NP205 auto or 4spd and never heard of any issues in all the years these trucks have existed.

I am not aware of any bearings in the adapter itself. Just the coupler sleeve and oil seals. You want the oil seals because they prevent all your ATF from being pumped into your transfer case. OK, maybe I'm wrong about the bearing. I'm used to the SM465 to NP205 coupler.

There is definitely one in mine. I haven't heard anything of the sort and I wouldn't leave the bearing out.

If you need to replace the adapter sleeve you can't get the old style with a stepped shoulder for the bearing, SO when you get your new sleeve just chuck the bearing also. The seals are still in there and work just fine without their bearing friend. Mine ran for years like that. Above all don't sweat it! See here:

Me too. I've driven these 4wds a long time and have yet to have a NP205 or coupler need any attention other than fluid change or seals. So, never learned anything about this
