Well Sh*t

Looks like I'm going to need a new motor for my truck. Mechanic says leak down test shows low compression in 3 cyclinders with 80% of it as result of blow by the rings

Will probably look to replace the transmission also while I'm at it.

I'd like to find a 327/350/383/400 SBC and a 700r4 to put in my truck. Anybody have any opinions on shops in the Dallas area or mail order to reccomend? Also open to board members that might be selling a new or barely used motor and or transmission.

Thanks guys. Bad bad day...

Just rebuild it. It would cost you less in the long run. You can gat a rebuild kit for $150.00. Plus you can add some HP goodies to it and make it really run. If I lived closer to Dallas I would rebuild it for you.

If you want to go for a rebuild, I highly suggest Kim Barr Racing Engines in Garland, he does top notch work. That or you could go with a GM crate engine with an outstanding warranty.

Yeah, I had a buddy that used Kim Barr you are right about his stuff. I would rebuild it but I'd rather get something with more cubes since it is only a 307. I really like to go no smaller than a 350...

Check out Larry's Performance Shop 323-722-8865
www.larrysperformance.com

These guys quoted me a 383 shortblock with TRW forged piston and 10.1 compression fully assembled, balanced and blueprinted shipped to my work for $1400 and something. That is amazing! The 350 block I had was going to be $1500 for machine work (.30 over, decked, and cleared for the 400 crank) plus another $800-900 for a rotating assembly. Plus I would have had to put it together. Not exactly what I wanted to do for my first motor build was 383 and have to double check and triple check the clearance and grind down the block when I am just an amateur, but I wanted the stroker. They do all that work for you. I know that having them assemble it takes the fun out of the build, but hell no you know its done right. They do this day in, day out. I haven't made it to that point yet, so can't tell you if its a good motor, but you can't beat the price.

Also someone on this site has a new 571 Gm crate motor for sale. Yes I said 571. Its the 12.1 compression 720 hp 650 ft lb? motor. Only $15,000. But just remember, it has GM's warranty!!!!!!!!!!

The new GM crate 350 is $1350 with a 3 year 50k warranty. I did it a while back. If I had it to do again I would void the warranty and put in a new cam and put my performance heads before I put it in.

GM also sells a 383 crate motor. It uses a 3.80 crank throw with clearance built into the block for the longer throw and rod clearance. This way the block can use a standard bore so that it can be machined a couple of times for rebuilds.Comes with the GM warranty.Another site is Scoggins/Dickey in Lubbock Tx.Just don't date the ditzy twits if you go to pick one up.
