Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers
Quick question on this topic. I have a 292 with casting number 3851659 which was produced from 1963 - 1976... the date code is F 30 6 so I am wondering if this is July 30th 1966 or 1976?

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers
More than likely if it's in a 66 the date code will be 66. If you found some original Green on the engine as well then that is a give away. In 76 the 292 was chevy orange.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers
Actually, Chevy went to Chevy Engine Orange in '67. in '77 they went to blue. So yes, a '76 engine would still be orange.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers
I'm well aware they went orange in 67. Just sticking with the mentioned dates. lol Guess I worded it wrong.

No sweat. This a Truck Forum not the Rocket Scientists' Journal. Just trying to keep the time line straight.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers
Hey guys, I have a real head scratcher on my hands here. I am trying to figure out the origin & CID for my engine but the casting charts I have referenced are off in my eyes.....maybe someone can set me straight. Here is what I have on my hands:
Casting Codes: Con 3 G131 3788378 According to the charts I have cross referenced, the block is a 292 but it is clearly not unless Chevy casted 292's with the shorter side covers. Anyone have any insight here? Thanks, Tony J.

I know some racers built "Cheater 292s'' with a bigger crank and pistons in a short 230/250 block to get around racing inspectors, but GM never did that. This is kind of a Zombie thread that keeps popping up every 3 or 4 years. Show us a pic of that block, if you're indeed not one of the ''Undead''.
