EFI Fuel Tank other than Boyds

I'm planning on running a 5.3L motor from a 04 Suburban in my 67 Suburban. Has anyone else used an off the shelf fuel tank and sending unit? I just read that someone used a gas tank from a 90 Wrangler and sending unit from a 87 GMC pickup in a 70 Chevy pickup. Just wondering if anyone has done the same with a Suburban.

I know most people go with the Boyds tanks. They look REALLY nice but they want $1000 for the tank with sending unit that I'm looking at for my Suburban. That is just out of my price range right now.

Thanks,
Nick

Re: EFI Fuel Tank other than Boyds

I'm using a 32 gallon fuel tank out of an 89 Blazer in my suburban, it has the baffles and uses a cartridge style fuel pump in the sending unit. Should be able to find them in the local scrap yards, rockauto also sells them new.

I read somewhere about there being a cartridge style fuel pump that would work for the 5.3 swap, I don't remember what the part number is though. I'll do some digging and see if I can come up with a part number.

Edit: Walbro 255 I believe is the one I was reading about.

I bought a new off the shelf stock type tank for my Panel Truck and it worked great. It has the return line port and a vent port if you want to use it. I used a Walbro external pump and a Corvette filter/regulator. Mine is a 5.7 LS1. There is a lot of info on the "LSX Swap" Forum on here....

Thanks for the help Chopsaw. I'll look into that tank. I'm sure this option is MUCH cheaper than $1000.

From Rock Auto, it looks like the tank with sending unit is $200. Then add a Walbro pump and I should be into the setup for about $300.

I'm using a '90 Suburban tank. It's not quite bolt in but the fabrication to make it work isn't difficult.

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know if the 90 Suburban was a 2wd truck or 4wd truck?

Looking at it, it looks like it's the same tank, says Rockauto.com. Not bad $233 plus a new tank maybe.

It looks like the 90 Suburban tank is 40 gal and the 89 Blazer tank is 31 gallons. Maybe the Blazer tank will be a little smaller and won't hang down as much. Eventually my truck will be fairly low.

Thanks,
Nick

Chopsaw and Bigdav, how low do you fuel tanks hang down under the frame rails? I was reading another post on the LSX forum and someone was talking about how they didn't want to use a Blazer tank because it hung down to low, as in it was lower than the stock tank.

Thanks,
Nick

Re: EFI Fuel Tank other than Boyds

My application is a K20.

Supposedly the 40 gallon tank I am using is deeper than the 31 gallon Blazer tank.

I don't have mine permanently mounted yet, still working out some kinks, but it looks like I have somewhere between 7-8" drop from the bottom of the frame rail to the bottom of the tank.

I wonder what a stock tank is? Not sure what I have for a tank in mine. Maybe someone with a stock fuel tank can measure for us?

Thanks,
Nick
