Points wire question

Hello, my 67 c10 250 oe distributor points wire that goes to the coil has a copper band around it on the part inside the distributor about 1-2" from the end terminal. Is this to ground something? Anyone have any pics? Appreciate it.

Re: Points wire question

Anyone? I'm referring to the primary wire running from the points to the coil.

Re: Points wire question

I am not familiar with the 6 cylinder distributor, but the principles are the same for all coil and points ignitions. The wire from the coil is "hot" until it is grounded by the points closing. It should not touch ground at all, and should go from the coil to the terminal in the distributor with no other connections. So, no, there should be no ground on the points wire.

Wonder what the metal crimp is for? If you look at pics from rock auto or oreilies For distributor primary wire they have this metal crimp I'm referring to.

Re: Points wire question

Is it just a means of keeping the wire from pulling out of the dist. housing too far? Seems like I've seen such a thing before - it'd be put on over the insulation if that was the case.

Re: Points wire question

Looks like what is called a strain relief. Just designed to prevent the wire from being pulled through an opening. In this case, to prevent the wire from being yanked out of the distributor.
