Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

I have a 72 Jimmy and the transfer case shifter wobbles side-to-side.
Presumably there should be a spring or something to keep it stable.
Can anyone tell me what should be there and if possible post a photo?
Thanks!

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

No spring.your bolt and or shifter is just worn. If its lifted your driveshaft
Angle could be wrong causing it to vibtate.

It is only held in place with a large pivot bolt, maybe your bolt is backing out, can't imagine shifter bolt or shifters wearing into an egg shape to allow wobble, but these trucks are over 45 years old. Lack of grease could cause it

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

I had one do that about 20 yrs ago, and I put large plastic washers from a plumbing supply between the bolt and divorce mount and worked great. Mine was a chinging and a rattling too.

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

I worked on my 70 Blazer NP205 a while ago and learned there were 2 size bolts used over the years. In my case I needed the narrower 7/16-14 thread bolt.

1969-70 used 7/16-14 x 2-3/4 bolt with 5/8 head

1971-72 used 9/16-12 x 2-3/4 bolt with 15/16 head
- the pic above from jaros44sr is it.
- I may have one, shout if you want me to look, they usually go for around $50

69 and 70 utilized the 221 case and in 1971 they went to the 205

My 70 has the 205.
Also, my shifter did not have the split bushings shown above. I was able to remove most of the slop with a large diameter washer.

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

Thanks. I am thinking about maybe going to a dual stick.
I installed a Lokar shifter on the floor and was thinking about making a console - so now would be the time for a twin stick!

Ok, I want to install a Lokar shifter like yours, mounted on the tail shaft, Got some more pics. If you want my advice on the twin stick PM me. I don't want to give negative advice about a companies product on the board. I have both

I had the same problem with making the two shifters look right together, and I think your mount for the Lokar may be the answer

If you find Stephan Jarvis's number please pm me

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

Sorry - don't have many photos and the truck is tucked away for the winter.
I got the nostalga version of the lokar shifter - it has a funky bend in it! I also got the matching bott trim ring that includes an LED display to show what gear its in. Super easy to install.

If I get serious about the twin stick idea I'll pm you.

Thanks, I was worried it wouldn't clear the transfer case shifter, I have the 10" shifter from Lokar and was thinking of going to the 8"

It looks like if you move the shifter to the rear mount, both would line up. Am I correct?

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

Jaross44SR - they would be close if you used the rear mount.
I cut about an 1 1/2 inched out of the length of the transfer case shifter to make it sit a little lower and a little more towards the passenger side.
I had a B&M pistol grip shifter left over from another project and put it on the transfer case shifter.

It would be fun in the snow!
Problem is they use a silly amount of salt on the roads up here!

What shifter mount did you buy....trans mount or tail shaft mount?

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

I bought the trans mount - I wanted the transmission shifter to sit ahead of the transfer case shifter.

Re: Transfer Case Shifter Wobble

Didn't see your truck.
I'm in the west end and have only seen 1 blazer, a bright orange 1970.
I bought mine from a gentleman in Chicago in 2012.
Drove through Oshawa over Christmas - I am originally from Kitchener and drove down to visit.

Hemi, where did you locate that large washer, between the shifter and the mount or between head of bolt and shifter?

My twin stix wobble, and thinking of turning down some sort of plastic, between both shifters, but didn't know if I should put it between all joints

Why don't they put the salt away, and let us fend for ourselves

I noticed that you marked up your trans mount plate, I'm guessing you had to slot mount to attach rear mount to adapter. Mine doesn't seem to line up with holes in adapter. I was thinking of modifying rear mount to allow it to fit to adapter by grinding mount

Sorry for the delayed response - I have been out of town.
Yes! You have a good eye. In order to get the shifter where I wanted it I cut a slot in rear holes to mount it.

Thanks for your time, eyes may be the only part working on me, comes from combing parts catalogs for 50 years LOL

What happened to cinders or sand for road traction
