Calling all Experts!

Someone here must know this stuff.

I'm on the home stretch for my '67 396 3OTT Saginaw with OD installation.

I need help with my overdrive installation. The governor is missing and I have never seen a photo of an actual unit. A large bolt is installed in it's place. The readily available governor has threads that screw into the overdrive that are much too large to fit. I didn't measure the threads on the bolt, but my guess is that they're about 1 inch.

I'm also have a tough time installing my lock out cable. I purchased the factory assembly manual, but couldn't find any info there. The bracket by the T-bar handle is supposed to mount just left of the ignition switch and I've seen photos of it mounted in different locations.

I also can't find any photos of where the cable exits the cab. I've been told a hole above the rear wiring harness hole and a hole above the gas pedal. I have the hole above the rear wiring harness, but it's about 3/8". I don't have an existing hole above the gas pedal.

I'm also have trouble figuring out where the cable passes the shift linkage. I don't want the linkage rubbing on the cable housing. It's pretty crowded down there with the shift linkage, but I have a lot of room between the tranny and the cab since I used the V8 crossmember.

Any photos would be appreciated.

Re: Calling all Experts!

Glen here is an OD thread with good pics and wiring info, etc. So far I don't see any pics of cable routing into the cab though.

Thanks, I've read that one. It's an earlier truck (60-66) and a Muncie trans. It's a good thread, but it doesn't have the info I need.

Re: Calling all Experts!

Not exactly on topic but did you read the article about converting the Saginaw 3spd into a 4spd and keeping the overdrive function, or it might have been adding the overdrive to the Saginaw 4spd.

I've read all the posts, bought the April 1975 issue of Hot Rod and I have a fresh Saginaw 4 speed waiting to be installed. I just want to get the OD operational, before I start that mod. 4 OTT.

Its an amazing concept...I had lots of those Saginaw 4spds and 3 spds back in the 1990's, I busted up numerous T5's too, if I would have known about that conversion I would have kept all those saginaws, I didn't have any overdrives but at the time they were very easy to find. I haven't seen any overdrive 3 spds lately but now I am on the lookout.

Re: Calling all Experts!

I ordered the CD version of the factory assembly manual. The hard copy had nothing.

Does anyone have photos or info?

On the CD, I would say it is the top illustration on page 403. 1" hole. There may be a punch out in the firewall insulator pad in that location. If you look at picture #2 in your post #2 you can see a small dimple just below the tail light wiring firewall connector and one just above it. One of those would probably be the location. If you used the top one the cable would have a more gradual curve to go under the floorboard.... Page 401 shows the approximate location of the under dash handle bracket.

Thanks for the detailed info. Is there any chance you could post a picture? My CD won't show up for another week.

I hope it's big enough. The top hole with no label would be the tail light wiring hole.

It's perfect. Thanks. I already have the grommet and I'm ready to drill a hole. That rectanglular hole looks like the gas pedal bumper.

I revisited the Factory Assembly Manual and found the pages. I must have glazed right over them.

Re: Calling all Experts!

I'm pretty confident that I have the cable figured out.

I still need to solve the issue with the missing governor. It'll be easier to find it, once I know exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone know anything?

The paper copy is tough to find anything in. You will love the CD, just type what you are looking for in the "FIND" box, hit the enter key on your keyboard and it will take you to the first instance of it, hit enter again and it will take you to the next one, etc.....
