Hood bow tie emblem idea 69-70

Just figured I would share with the group. I am sure I am not the first to do this but I think it came out pretty cool. When I got my truck the blue plastic piece inside the emblem was all busted to pieces so I removed all the pieces which and found that the previous owner did not take it off prior to the 1/2 azz paint job he put on the truck so the original blue showed through. I didn't want to leave the emblem hollow anyway as water and dirt etc would get trapped in there. I removed it and then used it to trace out a template then transferred that to some aluminum and cut it out with some tin snips. I was kind of stuck on how to secure the aluminum piece inside the emblem....thought about soldering but then after some research decided that was not a good idea. Most of the tabs inside the emblem had broken off. I eventually decided to use some job weld and clamped it in place while the epoxy set up. Easy project that didn't cost much at all.

Cool. I'm not normally a fan of this kind of stuff, but yours looks good.

Re: Hood bow tie emblem idea 69-70

Sweet! Thanks for sharing that Mhussnatter!

I've been thinking on what to do about my cracked blue plastic hood emblem too for a while now but hadn't come up with anything yet and I was resisting just ordering a repop from LMC

Your solution looks great and an excellent idea and in the spirit of smart DIY since it's got some extra soul over the repop.

I do want to keep my original blue color but you gave me the idea to look how to do that after doing what you did and I found two different things - the first one was 3M Blue reflective tape that is UV and heat resistant; so that looked better than what I have and could be layered on your aluminum idea.

But then I found something that I think might be even better than the 3m film which is glass microbeads, mixed with a transparent blue tint to match the exact OEM color; and then laid down on that aluminum backing just like you showed; and then maybe even filled with a clearcoat with a hypodermic like our Dentist member showed us with the emblems.

Here is an example youtube using the glass micro beads:

or just search for this video title on youtube:

Making reflective paint with glass beads. Guerra Paint & Pigment Corp. NYC

I would still need to figure out what size beads would look most correct to look most like the factory Chevy hood emblem.

I think in the video she is just using an emulsifier like glycerol or polysorbate-80 or lecithin and mixing with regular old PVA glue but maybe someone can chime in. She has her own names but probably just to sell their own product.

Thanks again for posting! Good idea and well done.

Cool, maybe match the center to the body color.. so it doesn't look like a billet add on..

Either way I like it...

Thank you! I just noticed yesterday that mine looks a bit crackled and need to look into making it look better.
