Removing the odometer wheels

I am at the point of removing the odometer wheels. I have removed the clip that prevents the wheels from moving to the left.



After removing the clip, the slot in the shaft is visible. That is where the clip was attached. Now there is nothing (I think) to keep the wheel assembly from moving to the left.



The problem is, I cannot move the assembly to the left at all. I've tried some PB Blaster penetrant to see if it would free up, and it has not yet worked. I grab the shaft with some needle nose pliers and wiggle it a little, hoping to free it. What do you guys think is going on here? Just frozen from rust, or am I missing some critical step?

It is just froze up in the hole. Your not missing anything. Try a screw driver with s plastic handle. After letting it soak penatrant, then tap on it with the plastic handle end of the screwdriver. Be patient and you will win .

Thanks, I won! I ended up using a punch and tapping on the pin from the other side (far right side).



It is interesting that on mine, the metal bar goes all the way across and holds the indexing slot still for all the digits, and it does not have one of those fragile plastic doo-dads.

I was able to change the mileage to the actual mileage that was on my old instrument cluster. My new-to-me used instrument cluster isn't cruddy and rusty like the original one.
