5 Speed manual - 250 Inline 6

has anybody put a newer 5 speed with overdrive behind a 250 six cylinder.

I cam across a newer 5 speed trans for free and just wondering if anybody has put one in these with a six banger?

I havn't done it yet but that is what i'm planning on doing. As far as I know it'll fit since the I6 bolt pattern is the same as the SBC

Sure would be a contemporary mod with high gas prices.I`ve given it thought so my son can enjoy these gems.

Yep, I've got a Camaro T-5 in mine. It's the easiest 5 speed to install. S-10 T-5's require more work but can be made to fit. What trans did you get?

The big problem with Camaro T-5's now is that every jackass wrecking yard wants to make you pay through the nose for these in the NW and it makes it harder to justify when you do the math.

Re: 5 Speed manual - 250 Inline 6

What bellhousing do you need for this swap?

I know of a couple of late 80's S-10's that are going to the crusher soon . One is a 4-banger, the other is a 2.8. I remember reading somewhere that the 4.3 ones would bolt up direct. I too would like to see some pics if you get a chance.

To revive this thread which nv4500 would I be looking for so that 1st gear isn't too low and 5th gear isn't useless unless you're doing 80 mph

Re: 5 Speed manual - 250 Inline 6

The NV4500 is a HD low shifting truck transmission with a granny low. I don't believe there were a lot of gear options

It would overkill behind a six cylinder.

I put a NV3500 from a `93 in a 70 c-20 and used the hump from a 4 spd. The shifter hole was in the right spot. I had to slide the cross member back and used a driveshaft yoke from a turbo 400. Pm me with your e-mail and I'll send you the microsoft word docs with all the changes. I used the hyd clutch.

Re: 5 Speed manual - 250 Inline 6

I have a 250 that I want to do the top end on, cam timing gears, port and polish the head, it already has a 2 jet on it, and headers. I don't know what transmission would be good behind the l6 with that work done and a set of 4.10 rear gears. I want to swap to a 5 speed to upgrade the Saginaw 3 speed. What would you guys recommend

From what people say the biggest thing is having enough toque to use the O/D so the gearing is huge..

I installed an '89 S-10 5 speed in my '67 with a six cyl a while back. It works great! I purchased the spacer plate and used the '85 Astro van 11" clutch disk. I didn't have to use the adapter ring in the bell housing locator hole, it was the right size for the S-10 front bearing retainer.

Here is where the '89 shifter is in relation to the bench seat. I bent the shift lever straight up from where the sharp bend was and it worked pretty good. It isn't as close to the dash as it looks. The shifter on it now is off of a full size pickup 5 speed and it is too big to screw on the shaft and too long. I just slid it down over the shift lever so I could test drive it.

The yellow circle shows where the original shifter hole was and the new hole is about 8-1/4" back.

Here is a thread with some S10 swap info:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=434512

Here is the thread where I installed an NV4500 in my '72 dually. It is behind a 350 but I think everything would be the same for an I6.

Here's my T5 install using the Camaro version and a shift relocater. I've added a lokar shift lever since then for better clearance with seat.

Re: 5 Speed manual - 250 Inline 6

I have a T5 behind a 283 in my '41 Ford Pickup.
5th gear on it is absolutely useless. It drops the RPM so much that the motor is turning 1500 RPM at 60 MPH.
I don't know if all T5's are like this and I don't know what gear ratio the old truck has. I drove it yesterday and recall that it was running around 2500 RPM at 60 MPH in fourth gear. I never shift it to 5th even at 70 MPH.
Just FYI.

There’s a lesson to be learned right there.
Most motors aren’t happy running below 2200 rpm.

With your info it would appear you have around a 3.50 rear gear. Depending on rear tire size.
Here’s a handy calculator for you.

Yep, you have to do your homework with the T5. Depending on which vehicle it came from, there are many ratios to choose from, but in your case, it sounds more like a rear end ratio problem. Needs to be a 3.73 or 4.10 to be in the right ballpark for a useful 5 gear.

This is the problem with modern overdrives, the .73 overdrive gear is too high. There were 5 speeds used in medium duty trucks ( Clark and Spicer ) with the overdrive gear being .80 which, IMO, would be a more desirable and useable in a heavier vehicle. Why the light truck transmission industry settled on a .73 is a bit odd, I'd rather see a .80 for a light truck.

Well I might have a junkyard source for Clark 5 speeds. Which one would I want to look for if I was to get one of those. It's a 3/4 ton truck after all, not a racecar

The Clark 280V0 has a .80 overdrive. Was optional on c50 c60 series.
