67-72 Tac...
Not sure how many of you know this but I have been on the board since the 80's and I just found out about this part last week for our model trucks.
You can buy a brand new board to fix your factory tachometer if you have one. They are 59.00 and have life time warranty. I just finished rebuilding mine and hooked it up to the Ramp truck to test it. I snipped the 2 wires off of their connectors and re soldered them and it works great. You have to unsolder the 3 legs out of the old tach also. This was the hardest part for me. But once I had them out it was nothing to it. I hate to admit it but I have thrown away 2 of these before because they quite working.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
Both of them worked last night on the Ramp truck with HEI. I just hooked them up and ran a jumper wire ground to verify. But they both did work. I got some more work to do on the speed warning parts before I take the cluster back out of the Ramp to install it though.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
Well I took the speedometer a part to fix the screw that broke off in the face plate. I hope it all works when I re-install it tomorrow. I put the Brother's new Tach in also.
I made my own pass through the tin for the ground wire also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_TDt_wMOJU

Re: 67-72 Tac...
Tach looks great in there
Since I don't have a factory tach to begin with, ...I was looking at the kit on Brother's site yesterday. Curious if you're running a stock coil, or perhaps a Pertronix? ...as I'm wondering about running a tach with Pertronix (FlameThrower II) installed. My understanding is that a resistor/cap? may be needed.

That set up is on sale right now @ $199. If you sign up for their emails, you get 5% off, so the total is $189. Don't ask me how I know. LOL.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
Andy, that’s awesome info! Now I can rebuild my original, and get it to work again. Then I’ll probably have to get another truck to put it in.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
I just bought another full 7 hole cluster with Tach for $175.00! It's original out of the guy's truck. Why I bought it I have no idea but I figured it's better than buying TP!

My Auto Sun [by AutoMeter] tach has outlasted my points system, my Pertronix II, and is currently running on a ''1976'' -vintage GM HEI w/ separate coil. [I have to tell the kid at the parts counter it's for a '76, otherwise, with the imperative wisdom imbued in him by a New Cybernetic Order, I'll hear "That part won't fit a '68.'' All hail our new robotic overlords.] A friend of mine with a '72 F-250 w/BBF 429 put a Pertronix III on his engine. Tach no go. He called Pertronix's customer service tech line. The guy said to switch back to a P-II if he wanted a tach. Or get a mechanical, like in 'Vettes. He still has no tach.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
I had a neighbor come by the other day in his 70ish Camaro. He had a box on it also from the HEI. It was hooked to the Tach connector on the HEI.
Could he not put a double connector at the HEI and run the tach and the box??? I have no idea if it would work but it may be worth a try.

Andy, With the Pertronix/Flamethrower I will be bypassing the resistor wire and running a straight 12V to the + side of the coil as you noted. When I mentioned adding a resistor (and capacitor) that was with regard to running a tach. I've heard some have issues(needle bounce, flutter) with their tach running a PertronixII and the 'fix' was adding a resistor in series with a capacitor to the - side of the coil. (One end of resistor to the coil -, one end of cap to ground, the midpoint where the resisitor and cap connect then being the point tach connection is made. I am going to try without the R/C and see if the tach is OK. IF I see an issue, then I'll try it. While I'm putting this in here, my understanding is that a 270ohm 1W resistor and a 1uF 50V electrolytic cap will work. When we talk about the FlamethrowerIII, it is MULTI spark, so that's a whole different story and I don't even know if a tach can be used with them.

Re: 67-72 Tac...
Brothers just screwed me over on the 5000 rpm conversion kit tach. for 199.00. I also order a new gauge bezel for 49. Total was 302. Got my box in a couple of days. I open it to find a gauge bezel and no tach. With the invoice mark with a sharpie B/O. And they charge my card for the full amount. It’s been a month so I canceled the tach and had them reimburse my CC for 215.with tax so I paid 30. For shipping a piece of plastic from s.cal to n.cal. Done with brothers..

Andy, my apologies, no intention to hijack But great info for those who have the tach and want to upgrade theirs (without having to wait for one from Brothers...which I'm beginning to think may be the issue based on Bad4wd' post ) Thanks, Kevin

The brothers Tach I got was less than a week to ship. I ordered it right before all this virus stuff hit though!
I only ordered the tach not the whole cluster mod.

Andy, that Cop Spot rules. Would it interfere with a stock 3-Spoke '68 wheel?
