Disaster avoided.
Got in the truck to take short ride, turned the key and poof smoke rolling from under the hood! Jump out pop the hood disconnect the battery grab my fire extinguisher. Well long story short very very lucky no fire but all the wiring between the battery, voltage regulator and alternator were burned to a crisp. No idea of the cause but it's in the shop now they are checking / rewiring and going to a 1 wire alternator. Sucks for sure but in the same note got very lucky.

Yikes, good to hear things turned out. Was a thread a while back and now this. Really hammers home importance of carrying fire gear in the truck. You just never know and I couldn't imagine the feeling of helplessness of watching a truck burn down.

Buy new harness for your truck it will be cheaper then rebuilding your 48 year old harness M&h and aaw both make a factory style harness with updates as well
A painful harness kit will cost you a lot more shop time as they have to lay out the wires terminate them and wrap them up |

A fire extinguisher and a battery cable wrench are real good things to have easy access to. Classic Parts sells real nice American Autowire sets already terminated. Looks like factory.

I would suggest maybe rethinking the one wire. There are better alternatives that still allow you to get rid of the external voltage Regulator. I’d look into a 10si or 12si conversion. More amps with better charge capability and control than a 1 wire.
That said, I’m glad you didn’t loose your truck!

I have to agree with 57 Taskforce on that. 1 wire alternators were originally made for farm equipment that had magnetos and didn't have normal ignition switches. Then street rodders who didn't want any more wires showing than they absolutely had to have picked up on them.

Thanks for the kind words and advise. Got the truck to Mike's Classic car restoration (check out his builds on facebook) this morning. Definitely going let him check everything out and tell which way is best to go. I'll keep you guys posted.. btw yes that's Holcomb wrecker service. They did a great job getting the truck there nice and safe.

I would look at cs130 alternator upgrades there better then the si10 and 12 alternators
Most cs130 cs144 upgrades are two wire setups with a resistor inline |

Good thing it didn't burn up! I'm thinking of putting in a fire extinguisher when I put in speakers. If there was a serious electrical fire I'd want my bolt cutters handy!

Those fuseable links in the front corners can get real crusty and make resistance. I'm no electrical whiz, so can't say the cause, but it seams rather than blow they create the issue. I've had smokin' wires from those things being funky on a few trucks. I'm sure glad that nice truck didn't burn
