More motor mount issues help!!

I am in the process of adding the 700r4 and relocating the 350 to the front frame holes. It fit nicely in the rear holes but had virtually no clearance for the HEI. What I figured was that it would move right up 3 inches or so and the 700r4 was 3 inches longer than the turbo 350 it replaced and viola! no driveshaft shortening. Trying to test fit everything and I'm not close on the motor mount stands. Please advise after looking at the pics. I tried switching sides and the botom stand hole seemed to line up the the rear cross member hole but the top still wasn't close. Not enough slack or movement to help.

He's absolutely right.

Beware though, your truck has long water pump front accesories. When you move the engine forward, the fan shroud will no longer work (if you even had one to start with).

I've run them for years with no shroud with no problems.

These trucks used short pump set up stock. Yours is 73 and newer vintage.

If you leave it in the rear holes use the I6 stands & 4wd shroud(its longer). Use V8 stands in forward position ,long pump, trim about 1-2 inches off the 2wd shroud w/sabre saw,Sawzall etc. Brian

Thanks everyone, this board and the information on it has been invalueable. I went to the local old parts salvage yard and found a set of v8 mounts. As stated I had the inline 6 ones. Silly me, I thought I could just slide them forward. Fake motor and 700r4 are in. I slotted the holes in the tranny mount of the corssmember to help use a couple of the many holes in the frame. Found out the drive shaft will likely need lengthening of 1 inch or so for safety. Fits now but not as far in as I would like.

again thanks

if you drill the eng mount holes (in the stands) out to 5/8", you will be a "happy camper" when swapping engines or mounts(just gives a little more room). good luck, crazyL

How did you do that without modifying the shroud?

The truck was set up correctly from the factory with the short pump setup and you added a couple of inches with the long pump setup. Something has to give somewhere. Seems like some guys trim the shroud shallower, but I'd like to hear how you did yours.

You have to trim about an inch or two from the engine side. A little sanding to the cut edge & no one will ever know. Brian

I didnt the truck had it when i got it . I still have the shroud ive since then converted to Electric Fans.

Ive had a friend of mine put the LWP set up on his without any problems.

Maybe the flex fan i had was smaller than stock? i want to say it had a 14" fan on it .

i dont think my fan shroud is cut and i've got a long water pump. and a 4 core radiator. if someone has the measurement for the shroud i could check to see if its been cut or not.

I think you could run a long pump with a stock depth shroud, but for the shroud to work at its best , the fan needs to be about 1/2 way in/out of the shroud..... crazyL

ive got same set up as highboy, v8 position, long water pump,4 core. my fan only sticks outside the shroud about a 1/2". i have not had any problems with over heating. is the optimum place half in half out to catch more air for cooling?

So, let me clarify: You are going from a TH350 to a TH700R4 w/o driveshaft modifications! Very encouraging.

How hard is it to modify/setup/replace the trans linkage?

What's a decent used 700R4 go for?

John

It depends on which TH350 you have. A 9 inch tailshaft TH350 is the same length as the 700R4 is. The 6 inch TH350 is obviously 3 inches shorter than the 700 is.

If you have a short shaft th350 the 200r4 is a direct swap. Same length, yoke, linkage etc.

Was there a "Standard" Th350 shaft length for a '70 C-10? How does the Th200R4 hold up? Is it as strong as the 350? Does the linkage need any mods?
