Hose on Rear End?
Can anybody tell me why I would have a rubber hose coming off my rear end that goes nowhere? It's shoved underneath the brake line on the passenger side of my truck?

So it just sits there? This is my new truck, I never saw anything like that on my '69

It is an air vent line that comes in handy on the boat ramp or in high water conditions,when the rear-end is submerged. It helps to keep the water out. It may have some other purpose though.

It actually serves a purpose all the time, when the diff. heats up, it lets out pressurized air

The pressure of the hot expanding air in the diff has to go somewhere. Out the vent tube is where it should go. If the vent clogs, it will leak out of the seals then.
Clean your vent periodically.

Yes, it is the vent tube...and it is a good idea to make sure it is not plugged up with dirt or debris. Also a good idea to check the condition of the hose to make sure it is not cracked, split ect. You really don't want water filling up the differential...trust me.
SLS has attached this pic:  The big arrow is just to point out the tube location. The small arrow denotes the location of the hose bracket that holds the tube to the cross bracket. It sets up on top of the 'ledge'..thus helping to keep the open end of the tube clean and dry. |
