This may be the top comment in this thread. I think a lot of owners and trucks could be better off never starting the paint process (even diy). There is a depreciation curve that is really steep when you start taking the paint off your truck and it is slow to come back up as you/the paint shop finish the job. The only upside is that owners that started paint and body 10 years ago have now seen enough appreciation in value for these trucks that they can break even on their unfinished project.

I enjoy restoring a good truck, but I don't enjoy them once they are finished.

The ones I love, are well maintained originals.

I usually walk right by "restored" vehicles when at shows to look at the barn find/original paint survivor parked next to it.

Sometimes a paint job is necessary, but that is where the entrance to the rabbit hole is....

Why I really love Original Paint Survivors.

Lots of $ in paint. In 1978 right after body school, I could paint a laquer job for 500 bucks all day long. Single stage sorta disappeared, laquer and imron came and went, EPA got more involved and then insurance companies piled on to help completely ruin the industry. If you want to save money on paint, it is a DIY thing. We have a few shops locally that will occasionally do a classic. I myself, cannot spend big bucks on a vehicle's paint. Maybe that's why satin jobs have picked up. 15g on yours does seem like a lot of cash, but it is probably not that far out of line.

I had to replace most of the panels on mine because my father in law used it to hold his garbage for about 20 years. He'd pile the garbage up in the bed and then haul it down to the dump about once every other month. Bed was mostly just a big hole. Sides were rusted and bondo'd decades ago, doors were rotten, front fenders were pinholed through with mainly pain just holding it together.

needless to say, it had to be painted. Cost about 2.5k in supplies, not counting the new metal. Painted it myself in my garage. nothing too fancy, but not completely awful. It's probably a 20ft truck -- looks good from 20ft. We were wanting a driver anyway, not a show truck, but I still probably have about 20k in it with all the new pieces and rebuilds it's had.

My truck had a base/clear paint job in the mid-'80s when my parents-in-law still owned it. The section below the lower belt molding is supposed to be white, and I want to put it back that way at some point. The clear is starting to peel, so something will have to be done. I'm no good at body work, though. Five years ago it was about $300 for materials to paint the roof while I had the old shell off, and before the new shell was installed. Of course, the hugger orange is made from the two most expensive colors.

My buddy rents 2 commercial shop bays and restores classics. Any level from frame off to all out custom to just patch panels and touch up paint. He charges a VERY reasonable $50 an hour. Most of the classics require some disassembly, complete paint stripping, some metal replacement, then bodywork and paint. Nothing is less than 10k. Most are between 15-20k.

I don't know if it works for you but a local body shop "let" me do all the sanding in their shop. Lot's of sanding. No one at a body is standing in line to sand filler and block sanding.
Took parts in one at a time so I didn't take too much space.
I never did any body work before.
Saved me a bunch of money but cost a few 12 packs.
