Bogging/dying when braking

Hey guys new to the forum! Looking for some help. I have a 68 c10 with a original 250/Rochester monojet, drum brakes all around w no brake booster so no vacuum connected to the brakes at all. Got the truck driving and idleing well but when I hit the brakes it bogs way down and if I hit them hard enough the truck dies. Doesn’t seem to happen at all in reverse. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Bogging/dying when braking

Check the float level.
Could be too high.

I did just rebuild the carb. Is there a measurement I can use to set it? I’m assuming I just bend it gently?

I don’t know the measurement.
Didn’t the carb kit come with that?
Try dropping it an 1/8 inch.

The kit didn’t come with one. Where would I measure it from?

Re: Bogging/dying when braking

I found the number in my motors manual.
It’s 1/4 inch.
Measured from the top of the casting to the toe of the float.
that means from the carb body to the end of the float.

Awsome thanks a ton. Do you measure with gas in the bowl or just push on it? Wanna make sure it’s in the correct position

It’s a dry setting.

Did you use a new float?

Re: Bogging/dying when braking

If the float adjustment doesn’t help it might be a wet float. They get fuel in them and cause that type of problem you have.

Floats available here.

My float was a lot lower than 1/4 in when I just checked. Any ideas for it bogging down and dying after being revved up as well?

Re: Bogging/dying when braking

Lower might mean bad float.

You had the carb upside down when you checked the float level, yes?

No I had it sitting on bench and I pushed on the float where the needle sits to seat it and measured from there. I also haven’t been able to find the measurement spec required I didn’t get instructions w the rebuild kit.

Reset the float level still the same problem. Looks like fuel seeping out and saturating the gasket between the top and the bowl. Any ideas if it’s not the float?
