Engine mounts: any tips?!

Hi:
I am replacing the engine in my 67. I have always had clamshell ones so, these ones are new to me. I had hard time even removing the engine since the center bolt getting cut to the engine mount perches' center holes. It seems if the engine doesn't come up %100 straight (or goes down straight), it would be impossible to remove/install the engine. So, here are the questions:
- How do you install these mounts?
- Does the center bolt gets bolt up after the engine is dropped in place? That would be hard to align to the hole on the perches!
- Do you mount the engine mounts to the perches first and then drop the engine?
- Can you just convert to clamshell ones?
- Any other tips?

If you loosen the bolts that attach the engine stands to the frame and cross member, then you can move the engine stands around to align them with the center bolt on each motor mount. This is the only way I've been able to get those bolts to line up.

That's pretty much the "standard" procedure. I was doing line work at the GM dealerships when these trucks first came out that's how we did it 50 years ago.. POL make a frame bracket replacement that gets rid of that center through bolt design. The through bolt is horizontal and the mount straddles the frame bracket and uses the more friendly Chevelle mount.. The good part is it uses the existing bolt holes, straight forward bolt-in, no fabrication involved.

I'll come back later with part numbers..

It also pays to have a good mechanics mirror to do this job. Position it to see if you are lining up. I still have trouble when I just have a bare frame. Paitience and perseverance.

Boy!, seems like a painful process! Specially when you consider that the bellhousing bolts are also have to line up.
About the center bolt, I can't see (too much old oil leak and grime) through my current mounts, is it a bolt which has been introduced from the back of the mount (the engine block side) or is it just a threaded rod?

Here is a thread I posted some time ago show how to modify the drivers side mount for easier installation especially on power steering trucks.

The only other thing is to loosen all the mounting bolts on the stands and when putting the bolts in the motor mounts don't tighten any of them until they are all started. It's kinda of a pain on most trucks but on some everything just lines up magically.

You could try and use the 4X4 mounts. Instead of a stud sticking out they are threaded so you put a bolt up from underneath.

Was going to suggest that myself. I have a pair of poly BB mounts that are the same as the 4x4 mounts I purchased from Brothers some time ago. I am not using them. LMK if interested and I will put them up in the parts section for you.

Well, I decided to upgrade to the newer model engine mount. I place an order on POL for newer engine mount bracket but the next day I got notified they are on back order for 3-4 weeks! Since I wanted to get my LS swap finished in 2-3 weeks, I ended up building my own. More detail is in LSX section but here are few pictures:

I used to work fleets of trucks that used these mounts. I always hogged out the hole in the bracket with a torch or step drill. The thick washer covered the hole.
